Attention fellow Polkies who have, or are living on the East Coast. I'm creating an independent study unit for 1st trimester of US History next year and have 36 ideas but still need 14 LESSER KNOWN historical events from colonization to 1800. For example: King Philip's War, Stono Slave Rebellion, Albany Congress, etc. If you have an idea please post. Thanks!

Another very little known area would be to look at the "Black Robe Regiment"... Protestant Christianity had a profound role in igniting the Revolution against the crown, but nobody discusses that part of our history. So upset by the involvement of the church in fomenting revolution that churches became legitimate targets of the British Army...

American history and the Puritans... They were a rough bunch, they put every one that wasn't one of them in the dues paying barrel.. All our forefathers paid their dues in there..

Actually spend a day discussing Roanoke. Start by showing Leonard Nimoy's In Search Of episode, then have them search for info discovered since the mid-1970's.

Covered! They really abused the Quakers, including tying one up and riding miles out into the woods, leaving them to find their own way back. In English class they read Witch of Blackbird Pond. Culminating with the Salem Witch Trials. The kids love it.

The Conway Cabal: the story of Washington's only competitor for command of the continental army. Buddy of mine did his thesis on it in university. Your prof would love it.

A bit further west, there was the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 (also called Popé's Rebellion) which drove the Spanish out of New Mexico. Although the Spanish returned twelve years later they never tried to be as oppressive as they were before and, as a result, the New Mexico Pueblos maintain their boundaries, culture and religion to this day.

Good one, especially for an 8th grade honor student.

The Pope' Rebellion I've taught since my rookie year. It's a great way to show how history repeats itself. Once the Spanish were gone, Pope' ordered the halt of anything Spanish, including tools and farming techniques. He became as oppressive as the Spanish. Three hundred years later the Ayatollah Khomeni did much the same thing in Iran.

Early western history is all but ignored by the east coast-based textbook publishers. One reason why I show the Emmy winning series "How The West Was Lost".
