Ok.I looked at the Hammond tube again in different light and angles with a magnifiying glass and I am pretty sure the top line is I63. The I is very smudged and the 6 is smudged a bit, making it look more like a C. It is a short plate and has a halo getter. From my research it would be the short plate with the 3 being a change code. The 2nd line of B5K1 would indicate Blackburn factory, 1965, November, 1st week. Sound correct?

The Amperex 12au7's getter is attached by a rod to the mica.

Also, I agree that the codes tell everything. It is interesting how hard it is sometimes to find the codes. I have looked at some tubes and been frustrated because I cannot find anything to go by. Then, later in the day or the next day I will check it out again and lo and behold I am in just the right light etc and there it is.

Yes, since the change code is I63 then the year is 1965. If the change code was I66 then the year would be 1975 and the getter would be a solid disc with dimples.

I have a 1956 ECC82 Amperex Holland long plate where there is no post. The D getter w/foil is angled and tacked to the plate post. Rare, probably no sound difference. My other 1956 and 57's and 58's all have the post.

Yep, nice tubes for sure. That date code can appear anywhere on the tube, even vertically. Sometimes it's under the other markings on the tube. They are very easily rubbed off too.

Talking about the codes being anywhere, I have a re labelled tube that I think is a Mullard, where the code appears to be upside down. I could not figure out what was there and then when I turned it upside down I was able to make out some numbers etc. Still very hard to make things out but pretty sure things are upside down.

I have valvos with Mullard date codes upside down. Seems common for them.

Another fantastic tube to try (if you can find them). In fact this might be my new favorite. 1948-51 Tung Sol 12AX7 - black plate w/square getter (slightly bent on short post). Extremely rare, although I managed to pick up a quad within the past 6-9 months(1 tube at a time). I have been hunting them awhile.

I could go on and on about these, they are superb but this link pretty much sums up how I feel as well.

Clarity, transparency and soooooooo smoooooooth......not a hint of grain or harshness.

Anyone use conductive paste on tube pins? Like gold or silver? Found this stuff at work... g0dwtc4xf93o.jpeg

The Wurth stuff is automotive. I'd use very sparingly.

I use DeOxit cleaner on the pins, I don't use anything else. I have put Pro-Gold on gold pin tubes. If I had some I'd probably use it simply because the extra lube might help with really tight sockets, like in my Avant pre.

The wurth stuff isn't a paste either. You apply it and let it dry. Just a thought, I like small free tweaks that may make a difference.

The data sheet says 1.4g of silver. But it's not too informative.

I'd be most worried about any build up or flaking left in/on tube sockets. 9 pin sockets are almost impossible to clean.

This was my exact worry. I'm going to skip it. I don't need to open a can of worms.

Wurth makes good automotive products. I bet it's designed to "apply" to electrical connections and prevent oxidation/corrosion. Not sure it's best application is tube pins.

Dab or spread a thin layer onto some metal with a Qtip and let it set for a couple weeks to see if it changes consistency.

Picked up a whole sleeve of these for the shanling:

    c565f9lj7cg3.jpeg

1968 GE 5 star, black plate. a whole sleeve of them with the same date codes. 29 bucks plus 11$ shipping. Not too bad considering the price I've been seeing them go for. Usually around 120-160 for a quad.
