Monday Rattlesnake fun....

Well, animal control just left with a rattlesnake that was in our office. Small one, about 18" maybe an 1.5" thick. I walked right past him, and did a double-take. Oh crap. Grabbed a yard stick and coaxed his not happy butt into the warehouse area, and threw a box over him. I didn't want him getting back behind our modular furniture, because we'd have to tear this place apart to find him.

Yeah, he was rattling--more like "buzzing" his rattles were so small. It's a Mojave I think.

I'd still like to know where momma is. Any missing forklifts in the warehouse ? Any VW's disappear from the parking lot ? Now would be a good time to send that Boss nobody likes to go get something from the back room.

I use to hike/backpack a lot. On one trip we were running a little behind to get to the proposed camp area by nightfall so we picked up the pace a lot. There I was rambling down the trail and there was a small sized tree that had fallen across the path. I figure my momentum will take me right over it so need to stop and straddle. Just as I am basically mid air over the trunk I hear rattling and notice a big **** of an eastern rattler coiled up on the other side of the tree...there was no way I could stop and all I could think of the newspaper reading "Man loses family jewels to a rattler".

Had to check my underwear after that!

The scary part was realizing that all morning that pup was slithering around my workstation, and could have came out under my desk, I would have never known. He was only 2 feet from me when I found him by our networked printer. I "guided" him out into the warehouse with a yard stick.

Snakes don't bother me---but that doesn't mean I don't respect venomous species; especially the young, because they don't do warning strikes like the more "seasoned" adults can.

I know right, these morons want to put them on an island and expect they'll just stay there! What's to stop them from swimming some place else? I honestly don't care how endangered they are.

He works in AZ, beautiful state but way too many creepy crawlers for me!

Uh....Cath, the east coast has many of their own creepy crawlers....on 2 legs.

When I was Younger we was visiting my Uncle & Aunt in Arkansas, my cousin took us down the side of this small mountain/hill covered in saw dust from tree's being cut down.

We were just sliding down on our feet and at the bottom were it was level was a fence and on the other side was a creek so our plan was to jump the fence and hop into the water but...

as we got closer there was a Copperhead wrapped around the fence post, by the time he yelled "Let's Catch it" me and my brother whre already half up the hill and the saw dust didn't slow me down at all

Uh....Cath, the east coast has many of their own creepy crawlers....on 2 legs.

But the main difference, is that I can see the two legged ones coming, or loitering looking like useless trouble and can avoid them.

With the damn things that slither, or crawl around and blend into their environment. I could be on top of the thing before I know it and it would be too late!

A customer at our local Lowe's was bitten this week by a copperhead in a tree in the home and garden center.

My warehouse loading gate isn't on a raised dock, we're at ground level. They slip right under the door insulating foam.

Not a rattler, but still not where you would expect to get bitten.

Our local Lowes has a family of HUGE Owls that live in the outdoor plant area. There's always crowds taking photos of them. Pretty incredible.

Problem solved: a few strategically placed signs stating that snakes are not particularly welcome and in no time at all ..... no snakes !
(as demonstrated by this expert herpetologist)

My daughter got bit by a small rattlesnake last year out here at the wildlife refuge, the small ones sure Pack-a-Punch. 16 bottles of Anti-Venom and a few days in the hospital she was good to go.
