I've a similar Gillette as well. I picked up this 60s-era Gillette Aristocrat at an antique shop and restored it. I let my son "use" it when we have our Sunday Morning Shaving Club.

Have you tried it John? I think it shaves very well, but I have never used another safety razor. Since the one you have is only 20 shipped on amazon, I think I might give it a try. but the thing is I have no problem with the big boy, and it should pretty last till I die!

Another here with thick scruff and sensitive skin. I stopped shaving a few years back, but when I used to shave regularly, I also like the mug and brush, and used Surrey Select/Deluxe Shave Soap (now Van Der Hagen), with the Gillette Atra Plus cartridges. These are dual rigid blades, not the spring loaded ones, like in the Sensor. They didn't conform in my case. I had to be extra careful so as not to gouge out my skin over any raised areas. Hated spring loaded blades. The Atra Plus has that fat lube strip, which really helped. I tried the Mach3 once - just once - and found the shave head to be too big to get around tight areas, like under the nose. Only took me one session of carving out three little stripes on my upper lip just below my nose to abandon that torture device and switch back to the Atra Plus.

I read an article once in a men's mag about preserving shave blades. Some company was selling an expensive liquid solution for you to immerse your blade in in between shaves that was supposed to prevent the oxidation that ruins the blade's edge. I think it turned out that it was just mostly alcohol. I think I experimented a bit with using just an alcohol soak in between, but couldn't tell either way whether it helped, and eventually just did the usual shake and store. I actually didn't like getting too close a shave anyway, because I'd usually get bumps a day or two after, and actually preferred using a blade with a few sessions on it. It was close enough and felt more comfortable and didn't irritate.

Also, hot-hot water was an irritant for me. I'd get razor burn if I used hot water, so I switched to cooler water. My process was:
    1. Alcohol soak for the blade in a mug while I was reading the soap with the shave brush; just enough to cover the blades
    2. Add warm water to the mug with the alcohol.
    3. Apply shave soap to face, let lather sit for 30 seconds or so (supposedly to let the hair stand out, I don't know)
    4. Shave
    5. Clean razor after each pass by swishing in mug with water/alcohol solution
    6. Rinse, pat dry, apply light lotion (It puts the lotion on its skin)

I stopped shaving a few years ago, mostly just due to the hassle. I only shave now for special events. Now I just use a combination of trimmers to keep it neat. This Wahl one, and a smaller Norelco one for tighter areas

To be honest I use these also and get easily a month out of them and I also just used Dove bar soap for lather while I shower. I agree these are super expensive but that best I have used since I used the Sensor blades until they crapped out with the rubber fins

  • What is this shaving of which you speak? I thought only women did that these days.

For years I used a Wilkinson safety razor that was a gift from my grandfather when I went into the Navy. I stopped shaving when the hardwood dust in the wood shop caused my face to break out.

Waiting on my first package as a free trial from harrys. I have grown a bigger beard than I ever thought I would, but there is still some areas that need trimming.

Harrys is 100% german steel and german sharpening.

the free trial comes with the handle, shave butter kinda stuff, and I think 3 5 blade razors.

If you want to keep subscribing its cheap as hell.

Harry's - the best shave I ever had! Tried quite a few different brands/razors.

$10 got me the very nice handle, cream/lotion, a handy travel bag blade protector and a couple/few blade cartridges - shipped. From there, it's $2 or less per blade cartridge, to your door.

Was sick of paying a fortune for replacement blades, so I thought I'd give them a try. Wasn't thrilled for the first shave or two for some reason - don't remember why. Smooth sailing ever since and I don't see making a change any time soon.

I'm not a huge fan of their creams and such just their handles and blades. My wife is using them too, we each have our own handles and I have a spare that I bring when we travel. Yes they are super cheap when comes time to refill and I get them within a day or two. It did take me awhile to get use to the blade as in how it shaves and moves with the contours of my face, not there is no issue. I couldn't stand paying 20$ for 3 refills on Gillette, glad I found these guys.

I have never used shaving cream butters or anything else, even at 530 am in the army with a cold face and cold razor.

Just liked forcing myself to pro ceed.

I'm sure I wont be ordering any creams but might keep a stash of their blades.

In the army I felt terrible for some of the black guys, their facial hair tended to curl and grow back into their skin or something.

All I know is that horrible masses of bumps and irritations would come up on their faces, and very few could get exemptions to allow them to heal before having to shave again.

Looking at the blood and pink shaved off bumps truly made me feel for them.

LOL. I shave twice a week, Sunday and Wednesday night after being in the spa. First, I use a Track Two for rough work, and then a Sensor for in close. Then when I get tired of shaving I grow a beard for a month. Then the next month I go back to shaving twice a week.

Any of you guys shave twice ? I mean....guys with sensitive skin, you shave down first, lather up again and shave up. Cleanest shave you'll ever get with a cartridge.

I told my wife to try it on her legs because she was always cutting herself up. Dang if it didn't work great for her too.

LOL.....I've used hair conditioner when the can runs out occasionally. Works well too, even hand soap works well but you smell like flowers afterwards. Your right though, the cream feels awesome on the face....along with a hot towel after.

The difference for me today, at my age....is I don't have to impress anyone anymore. Don't have to look like a GQ model walking out the door in the morning, not that I ever did but you get my point.

I also find the length of the whiskers, how long you go in between shaves, plays a part in which blade is better to use.

Ha I use hair conditioner all the time... Paul Mitchell "The Conditioner" a $10 bottle lasts about 2 years and never scrapes or nicks...Gillette Fusion razor... works good.

I've been using the Merkur Safety razor, Proraso shaving soap and Feather blades which I bought here...

    Merkur Safety Razor

    Proraso Shaving Soap

    Feather Razor Blades

I got tired of paying those ridiculous prices for the cartridge type razors. Now they have like 5 and 6 blades in those cartridges, costing a small fortune. 1 blade gets the job done!
    No excuses!

Cant take your safety razor in a carryon on a plane tho... If you keep your blade/cart in mineral oil between shaves it will last 4 times longer.

I've had a beard for what seems like forever now and also use Wahl clippers with the #1 snapon to trim that.
But when I did shave, I used a Gillette safety razor with Gillette blades.

Shaving cream ? Only 1 choice, IMO: Barbasol.
So, as the following documentary shows, MAN UP, and use Barbasol !

You dudes with the long beards don't need any shaving stuff, just go get groomed every 3 months at the local vet. Heck, they even have a mobile grooming service that will come to you....clip those claws on your toes too. :p

....and if you behave yourself, they may even put a ribbon around that beard to make you all Purdy .

I have loved the Bic Advance Comfort 3 for the last ten years. I liked them so much when I discovered them that I found discount coupons on eBay and bought a ten year supply. Now I am down to my last four pack. I do not know if they even make this razor any more? Trying some Dorco razors next. If I do not like them I will go down the safety razor path. Thanks for all the choices. Peace. Dqnf7jj19ug6l.jpeg

I was weary of the lack of grip on the handle.

What's your opinion on the grip when it's wet and such? Yes, I know:

From what I understand it's the chrome version that has a lot of gripping issues.

I have the satin version and I have no issue with the razor slipping.

However, I have learned to always adjust the blade with a towel covering the head of the razor.

You have to grip the head of the razor to twist the handle. If the head does slip out of your grip, you're likely to loose a bit of your finger, like I did...
