Today I received a "free" Pioneer Elite VSX-94THX receiver

This is a goggle image

This receiver had a MSRP of $1800
What it didn't come with was a remote control or a manual

Since I know nothing about home theater I was wondering if this is considered a decent unit ?? Should I search out a remote ??

Thanks

Manuel can be found online in 30 seconds, as for the remote I'm quite certain you can get one easy enough on eBay or strait from pioneer. And free is fantastic congrats.

    Cheers

Can't beat free with a stick. You have a use for it though ? Won't give you the newer surround sound codecs but if you don't do movies then it isn't a worry.

Yep, she was a powerhouse back when, but with outdated software the use for HT is somewhat limited. Might be good driving a second system where all the bells and whistles aren't needed. Has a decent dac in it, a good amp section, and free....gotta use it for something.

Wow are you guys jokin or what? The only codexes it doesn't do are atmos and 4K pass through. LOTS of us are into HT and don't have either or those.

If u don't want the avr I will happily take it off ur hands

Thanks much I'm afraid I wasn't understanding Tony's replies. As I stated I know less than nothing about AVR's / surround sound. I contacted a friend who told me the same thing as to the remote. I'm looking at the Logitech Harmony 650 on Amazon at $55. Upside to this vs. the original remote is it will do the my Blu-ray and TV.

Yea that receiver looks awesome. The only thing that I am interested in that it wouldn't do is stream music. But for that price you can buy something else...

Yes that remote is fine. Cheaper on eBay though...I think I see returbs for 38 shipped...

Why "free" instead of free? You traded something in return?

I've got the 92 on the bedroom system. The original remote is nothing to write home about, it's too busy and laid out poorly. The Harmony 650 is much better.

I've got the manual in PDF if you can't find it online.

Did you get the calibration mic?

Haha I don't even know what a calibration mic is. So the answer is no.

True for the most basic functions but you'll be hard pressed to emulate all of these buttons with the typical remote provided by your cable/sat provider.

This line of VSX is very good for HT, will support 7.1 and play the newer codecs as PCM in each channel. I had the 81 model of this series and passed it on to my oldest when he moved out. The calibration mic helps when setting up a HT system and helps setup the Surround Back speakers If your not sure about it send it over to me, I have the remote.
