Ground loop issue and imaging...

I reintroduced the Pass labs to the mix tonight after I set the Xono to ten settings desired by the C/A Titanium. I have triple checked the settings on the Xono, and they are correct for low output MC. The previous settings had no hum issues. It was set to MM, and the Dynavector was happy there. All connections have been checked and checked again. I use balanced connectors from the Xono to the X1, and a tol shelf Analysis phono cable...

More perplaxing is the image has shifted to the right, and I have to compensate by adjusting the balance to the left a couple points. This has never been an issue before.

I have also redid the connections on the SDA's so the phasing is once again correct. The above is only when listening to the turntable. All other components operate flawlessly with no problems at all.

Any ideas guys?

Crazy thought....the last setup was off and the new one is revealing the actual recording?

I am thinking the troubles are inside the Xono. There are what look like adjustment pots that could be off, and the ground loop did not start until I flipped the switch to MC from MM... I think I will be sending it out for service whe I get the motor for the table tweaked.

My god this sounds superb... Charlie Rich is alive and in the room.

Sounds like you have reached your "almost" pinnacle in the journey. It's been a treat to see you flourish from a pair of 1C (IIRC) to building your own tube space heaters to this.

I had monitor 50's, a Yamaha RXv2090, no turntable, and no clue. One thing for sure is I was a putz of epic proportions. The other thing I know is I would have a much bigger bank account if I had been banned way back when...

John, hate to ask such a silly question given the cost of your new toy, but are you sure the cartridge is shielded ? I'm more inclined to think the hum is coming from the cartridge or how it's grounded than the phono itself.

Of course you can always go old school and run a wire from the phono to another piece to see if that helps.

The balance issues may be related to cartridge alignment, or the dip switches in the phono pre. The ground issues may prove more problematic.

Probably shoot Pass Labs an email since it's their phono pre.

I talked to them this morning. I an going to do some troubleshooting, but they also suggested I look to the cartridge setup. I am going to pop the top off the Pass and reset the dip switches, and deoxit them a bit too.

Could the image balance issue be related to antiskate?

John, not familiar with your TT but mine has 2 ground wires. 1 from the center of the spindle and 1 with the rca's. I had both the grounds hooked to my pre and had also a hum. So I took the one from the center of the spindle and hooked it to my avr and the hum went away.

The hum started when I went from a MM cartridge to a MC.

I went from high output MC to low output. I am going to run another ground from my phono pre to the power conditioner and see what that does.

Are the connections going to the right place where they plug into the cartridge?

Ok... Did what Pass recommended and popped the top again. Made a tweak and the imaging is resolved, I also put things back on the MM setting and left everything else the same, the 60htz hum also vanished. Back to the MC and it returns. This eliminates the cartridge, cables, and everything else but the MC side of the preamp. Looks like a trip to Poppa's workshop is in order.

*** Edit.... I found the hum is still there, just nowhere as close to noticeable on the MM side. I guess that tends to put some focus on the cartridge, given that is the only variable the has been changed.

John I did what Rich @SCompRacer did by using a SUT (step up transformer) with my high MC cartridge and using my phono amp set to MM and it works great! works even better for Low MC cartridges!

Got my from Parks audio and Shannon ask about my set up and then gave me the correct loading's.

Same here. Love the Budgie SUT. Does wonders for my AT and DL-103r carts. Has a ground lift that might be useful in your case?
