There are many steep hills here at Club Polk.

My apologies, bearded brother. We tend to get carried away at others expense.

No need to apologize for anything. I have to admit the whole "groupies" idea was a little strange but would not be the weirdest thing I have ever had happen. Its all good and no offense taken. Have fun and don't worry about me.

Vanilla will catch fire before you go to far for me.

I would agree but I don't think I ever been right a day in my life. furthermore I would hope that anything that I post don't cost anyone anything.

You do realize we have professional and well experienced thread derailers here, right ?

I think this thread was doomed from the start. Next time I know to advertise "Audio Grade" lead but some wisenheimer will try to argue wire coathangers will work just as well.

Plastic coathangers are better you cretin
  • I thought plastic coat hangers were only used when they were to be in close proximity to an inductor.

I wish you guys would make up your minds. Confusion like this could turn a guys beard white. to late

I want to see the postal worker's face when you haul in a flat rate box stuffed with these, LOL!

A few years back I ordered 50 lbs. of lead shot, which came in a flat rate box. My postman, who was a short portly gentleman looked like he was ready to have a heart attack on my front porch. I promised I wouldn't do that to him again.

I avoid a little old lady beat down by calling the main office with a warning. I will get a call the boxes are at the main office for pick-up. I got some serious dirty looks when I showed up with two boxes to go out.

F1. Have you ever been in the position of trying to recover the lead from the sand? Does the lead have to be in shot form or would 3/4" cubes work just as well? I do not have a shot tower handy but could recast ingot lead into something more consistant for size and weight.

Other than speakers I have never tried adding weights but the idea seems logical enough. Anyone care to share thoughts regarding size, shape, and weights that might be useful?

I haven't, but just thinking quickly here. Pouring it out using a screen would let the sand go through while collecting the shot.

Using lead alone would certainly provide the mass, but the other part of the equation is having the material densely packed. I believe if you used the cubes mixed with sand the results would be favorable.

Thanks Jesse. I would expect the sand would be necessary to fill the spaces between the cubes. I was not clear in that regard. The idea behind using cubes is to take advantage of all available space in the mailer. If I can fit every bit of space in the box the weight should be in the neighborhood of 24 pounds or 270 to 280 cubes at a weight of 610 grains (1.4 oz) per on average.

Doing a quick google on shot prices we can be competitive.

We are in a unique position in the new shop. I call it geezer daycare just to mess with the guys but I find myself having daytime custody of a couple of retired guys with nothing better to do than sit around my shop sucking down free coffee. The upside is they are both skilled wood workers. I want to put these guys to work assembling speaker stands. With the Wart Hog panel cutting machine right around the corner pre-cutting parts for something like speaker stands (or speaker cabinets) is a snap.

My overhead here is so low we can build speaker stands to order and easily turn a profit at or even below what I see for prices on comparable product.

    Gotcha on the cubes.

Making stands to order would be way cool. Maybe make a few examples to show what the geezers can do and to gauge interest.
