OK well in reading your first post this isn't "smallish" so my thought was I have a Denon 3910 if you would like to pay to have it shipped to you. It got wonkie on me with CD's but it played SACD/DVD-AUDIO just fine.

    Your call Bruce

Thanks for the offers but I can't make a normal sized player fit.

You should be able to find a cheap smart Sony BDP on CL to suit your needs. Here are 3 in the LA area.

Of the 3, I think the S580 is the best.

All 3 of these play SACD. Look at the Tattoo on the BDP-S580

This is a slick little machine for not alot of cash. It has a good wifi connection, it has several streaming options, it plays SACD, and if you have more than one you can use "party mode" and stream from one to the other. Not to mention it is an excellent blu-ray player.

Very small, very light and plays SACD's. Had good reviews when it was new in 2012. I have one and really only use it for movies, so can't comment on SACD's, but you won't find one smaller

The thing is, most of the blu ray players don't have 6 channel analog outs. Never owned an OPPO or higher end SACD players, but from my research, most of all in one players will play SACDs in 2 Channel format if the outputs are digital (co-ax, HDMI etc). I may not be correct, but don't SACDs and DVD-A's send data in analog format? Whats the point of buying SACD player if you get 2 channel sound, unless you have another DAC in the chain.
At least thats what I understood. Hence I bought one with analog outs. Correct me if I am wrong, I am always up for a learning.

newer DVD players pass through HDMI or Denon-link if you have a upper Denon of years past.

I have a Yamaha BD-A1010 which does just about everything, including SACD. I've never used this feature as I don't have any however. I would imagine you could find one cheap if you had the "room". It would match your Yamaha receivers pretty well too...

Didn't know newer ones passthrough SACD signals through HDMI. Good info, thanks everyone.
Now inadvertently I will start looking for Blu ray player that will do SACD through HDMI. What will I do with the two separate players(Blu ray and SACD) I already have? Sometimes I really don't like you guys. Wife is already not very happy with a lot of wire mess. Probably I can get a new blu ray player with SACD capabilities just because it will reduce the wire clutter. Hmm, that will definitely make her happy.

I have a question, and this thread seems like a good place to ask it! (with apologies to the OP)

In the (fairly) early days of the SACD, there was a plethora of 'universal' players at (fairly) low prices... and there were also audiophile SACD players at... astronomical prices.

I've even got one of the former (a Yamaha 5 disc CD/DVD/SACD/whatever changer?!).

Back when I got the Yamaha* I "learned" (i.e., I read someplace, or was told by someone) that there is some fundamental difference in the way that the cheap SACD-compatible players handle the SACD datastream relative to the good ones. If I understood correctly (and there's no guarantee that I did), the cheap players, in essence, convert the SACD datastream to something more or less interchangeable with redbook CD (sampling rate and resolution). In other words, any enhanced resolution in an SACD is basically processed out of the cheap universal players, and what you hear is more or less identical to playin' a redbook CD.

Was this just an hallucination I had or is there something to it?

Since I know there's a fair amount of digital format savvy at these forums, this seemed like a good place to ask if anyone had some clarity on this (or can point me to a resource that addresses the topic)!

Thanks -- and sorry for the quasi-hijack!

    * FYI and FWIW, the Yamaha is in its box on a shelf down in the basement.

Mrh, Start reading this thread on page four. It gets really confusing. I think this is what you were referring to, universal dvd players sacd capable that downconvert sacd's dsd to pcm, then back again. I'd be interested to know how this works as I have Samsung, Sony and Pioneer dvd units that play sacd's. http://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/120137/when-was-the-last-time-you-have-used-your-cd-player

I will do -- as your note sounds exactly like what I think I remember reading, or being told, or hearing, or something like that!
