lsi9 wrong tweeter and burnt crossover

Need some advice. I just bought a pair of lsi9's off the net and after listing to them for about a week I notice they sounded different from each other. check for blown speakers I discovered the tweeters didn't match. I called polk service to order the correct tweeter and the tech told me to check the crossover. and yes it is burnt. so what i am asking is this a easy repair and or should I do the mods that I have read about on the forum.

please helpni3ziduhiab7.jpg

That looks like the correct tweeter or are you saying the sound doesn't match?

As for the crossover, you need to replace the resistor and do it to both speakers. The values are marked on the resistor, but you will want to increase the wattage rating from the stock 5 watts to either 10 or 12 watts. Mills make an excellent resistor available in the proper values. You can buy them at www.soniccraft.com.

Looks like you lost a resistor (white block) and possibly need to replace the adjacent capacitor (black barrel) because it was likely over heated. Also follow the board traces to see if any are broken and need to be jumped. Neither are to difficult to do if you are patient and have a solder sucker, a good iron, and a meter.

If these types of repair knowledge and/or tools that you don't just have a local repair shop handle the fix....shouldn't cost much.

I would recommend upgrading those components to a better quality and duplicate both speakers while you have them broke down.

That is Polk's part number, however it is a Vifa tweeter they use, so it could be the same one. Best to play it safe though and get one from Polk.

Yes, the cracked small white resistor is the 5 watt one.

Replacing the 10 watt is a good idea as the Mills will sound better.

yep it called listen "these things ROCK" and then the dial goes to 11....
  • The tech I talked to said having the wrong speaker hooked up can do that. he is the one that told me to look for the burn marks. The good thing is I contacted the guy I bought them off of and he is going to pay for the repairs. and for the OEM tweeter.

It's a 4 ohm tweeter, the same as the Polk version, which is an off the shelf Vifa tweeter. The chances are it's the exact same tweeter. That said, the "replacement" tweeter did not cause the resistor to cook. That was caused by someone cranking the volume level into the clipping range. In addition, the original 5 watt resistor should have been a 10 watt. It's a well documented issue with the LSi speakers.

  • F1nut thanks, I was just going by what the tech told me. and really I dont know enough about the inside of the speaker. its what comes out of the speaker. and it was the difference from the left and right that made me look inside and the 2 tweeters are completely different. one had twice the magnet as the other. the tweeter was still working. can it still work if the resistor is burnt? mfr3dw3trlym.jpg

That's a bucking magnet on the Vifa labeled tweeter.

It shouldn't be, but you never know.
