Some printed burlap at 30% off is about $11 per board...

Pulling tight and stapling is probably the most annoying part...

Insert the fiber board. I got mine at ATS acoustic. It's similar to Owens Corning 705, but without the formaldehyde...

    And here you go!

Less than an hour per board. I am going to mount them and I'll show those pictures when that actually happens...

Looks very nice. I always said I would make the type you have made but never did get around to it. I finally did this

    http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/everything-else/269366-making-easy-diy-depot-sound-diffuser-panels-step-step.html

I can work with the wood and 2-8 ft difusers cost about $130 not counting the nails to hold it all together. Made a huge improvement! Pics later.

Very nice and I like the printed burlap. I've never seen it before.

Looking forward to the final pictures.

Yes, great job! Simple, but hopefully effective. Can't wait to hear how they work out for you.

Those look terrific. I was going to build my own when I set up my studio for recording, but never got around to it, so bought them.
If the fiber board is flush with the back, you may want to put something in the corners to separate it a bit from the wall.
An old, but effective article. Ethan Winer knows what he's talking about:

    Cool, Paul!
Where did you source the printed burlap?
And, you mean used potato sacks from 5 Guys Burgers wouldn't've been acceptable?

    What's ATS?

Do you know how you'll mount them yet? Just hanging wire? Looks like a great place for hiding secret documents, too.

I might be watching too much Burn Notice.

Good work, treating the room is one of the first steps to good audio! I made a set almost identical to yours a few years ago, wouldn't be without them now.

JoAnn Fabrics. Printed burlap is 2 or 3 times more expensive so use a coupon or wait for a sale. And if you want just standard burlap, you can make these super cheap.

Google ATS acoustics. They sell fully completed products and also DIY material. I also think a lot of people like GIK acoustics.

My plan to hang them... I bought 6" landscape screws and I'm going to have about 2.5" sticking out from the wall, then I'll put hooks on the top of the panel and just set them on the screws at the ends away from the wall.

It looks cool in my mind, but we'll see how it turns out. :)

That was a joke about 5 Guys Sacks, haha
Regular burlap would probably be pretty gnarly unless you were putting these up in a rustic cabin? And they'd smell like potatoes.

ah man, that actually does sound kind of cool having them out off the wall a bit.

    Great tips.

    Very nice idea and implementation!

I would think it'd be fairly easy to also use a standard fabric and screenprint/stencil a specific design onto it.

  • Very nice. As an aside - I have been able to get a few burlap bags from a local
coffee shop - some look quite nice.

Great job Paul. As already mentioned, room treatments are a must for anyone serious about the performance of their system. It is one of those investments that is hard to rationalize due to cost. Then you hear the difference....

I believe if you hunt and dig hard enough it can be done for a reasonable cost. Buying them straight from gik or prime acoustic is super expensive. Six corner traps costing 299 a pair!

Shipping is what kills you with a purchase. My bass traps are from GIK, and I love them, but they were expensive to ship. Fortunately I found someone in LA who makes the 2" panels for not much more than it would cost me. That said, these printed ones are WAY cool!
