If your audio nut is already busted who cares what it feels like in your hand? You won't be playing with it for a while right?

Congrats Mikey. That is a serious purchase for 2 channel listening. As far as the amps go, I wouldn't be so tied to them. You have some serious hi-fi gear in there and as good as B&K is, they are still mid-fi. There is nothing wrong with that, but they are quickly becoming your bottleneck with each new purchase you make.

You, good sir, are an enabler. Luring this young man into your den of audio hell.....

    Good job, D :p

Have had this same pre for a while now...and am a huge fan.

The stock tubes are EH 12AU7s but Cary had their hands on a batch of original Mullards (not re-issues) that they would allow folks to special order. I got mine basically new, unused, just opened to take pics before the original owner decided to get a 05 instead.
Called Cary and they allowed me to transfer the full warranty into my name...fantastic customer service.

    Enjoy the new pre Mikey!

I'm already getting the itch to roll some tubes into it. The difference it made with my shanling was quite a shock. I see upgrade kits are still sold for these.

I should give it some time in stock form before I get into it though.

@ZLTFUL how do you like your remote? Lol

It's been a while since I was able to enable. Feels good, like shaking the dust off that leather jacket stowed away.

Glad to help! and the amps will be the next upgrade. But probably not for a year, I need to build the bank account back up.

    What do you recommend? Hehehehe

Well, I need a power cable. I'm using that sad one out of the box for now. And a cheap universal remote of some kind.

I am with Joey...stick with the stock tubes at least through burn-in. You may like them.
I got the stock tubes along with a set of the Cary supplied Mullards when I got mine. I haven't switched them out yet as I dig the Mullards as they are. I did pick up a set of 1956 RCA 12AU7 Black plate slant D getters from @snow to play around with once I get my 2 channel rig set back up but so far, I have enjoyed the Mullards. The EHs haven't even left their boxes yet.

So far system has been on straight for 42 hours, listened for about an hour last night and it is sounding really, really good.

This weekend I will be picking up some RCA clear tops from the 60's. They guy wants 10 bucks each, he has eight in total, I might grab them all. I hear good things about the D getters and clear tops. I will leave stock tubes in for at least a couple hundred hours.

  • First off don't panic, but you are in trouble.
    Survival steps:
    1) Relax your legs, and don’t make any quick movements towards your wallet.

    2) Lean backwards in your lazyboy and try to pretend you are floating on your back so that your legs rise as the lazyboy rises.

    3) Spread out your beer and chips on the surface next to you.

    4) Remain in the backfloat position to keep your weight evenly distributed on the surface until satisfied.

    5) If you’re unable to pull yourself up or if someone else is unable to assist you with your chores, remain floating on your back and begin making snakelike motions during
funky tunes or the traditional head bob for rock.

The Cary has been on for a little over a hundred hours now, I've been listening every night. Sounded good at first, almost sounded worse the after hours Of being on. Last night things were sounding phenomenal. Tonight I am smitten, huge sound stage, it's deep, very deep, hearing things behind me, above the speakers, just amazing, it's a match made in heaven with the focals, very accurate. I haven't heard SDAs but these things image like a champ. If there weren't walls here it would be even widerr, I can't explain it, but the true potential of the electras has been unleashed.

During break in I found the highs a little fatiguing, but things have leveled right out. It's sooooo good, it is destroying the benchmark as a pre, which I have to defend, being a little box it did everything so well. It was clean, and... Clinical? It didn't add or take away anything that was played through it.

This Cary is life changing! Oh man! The tube possibibilities!

Cool man. While using a dac as a pre has it's following, adding a tubed pre in the mix is simply no comparison imho anyway. I also love that Cary sound, they seem to get the tone right and image very well. A more musical sound to my ears. That's not to say even companies like Cary can make a turkey along the way too. Spent the weekend doing some critical listening, having about 140 hours on it. I'm liking it!

Had the day off today, a friend of mine gave me some GE 12au7a with the label Hammond on them, these are mid 1960 from an organ, they test as close to nos with his tube tester.

I'm incredibly shocked the difference in sound with these tubes. Smoothed out the top end, very sweet sounding, laid back and super detailed. After about an hour the bass is coming out of them, tight, deep, just awesome! I can see this being very addicting!

I managed to find a quad pair of matched RCA 5814A black plate tubes for about 50 bucks. These test strong and are also mid 1960's, these were pulled from some sort of old military equipment. Hard to believe they test so strong after 50 plus years! We will see in about a week how these sound.

Tubes I will try after the RCA's will include:
    - amperex bugle boys
    - JJ/tesla gold pin
    - RCA clear top

All of these tubes I'm finding pretty cheap. The bugle boys being most expensive.

Seems the 1960 era tubes are the sweet spot!
