I just found these on DC CL. In excellent if dirty cosmetic condition. The seller said one channel wasn't working. I am hopeful that a good cleaning of the pots and the preamp coupling switch will do the trick. I'll post updates when I have them.

Not just eye candy -- nice stuff. Sonically, even by modern standards, I'd opine.
Aesthetically very nice too -- heck, Yamaha's basically gone back to those 1970s styling cues with some of their current products.

Hard to believe those components came from the same era as the AMC Gremlin and the leisure suit :-P

The coupler "issue" is endemic in those old Yamahas (as I'm sure you know). We'll all hope for trivial resolution to its issue. I think the "Class A" switches sometimes suffer from careless users who change operating modes with the amp on and running, too.

The left channel on my CA-1010 is out as well, somewhere in the preamp stage. Left channel works fine if I use it as a power amp. I'll get it to a tech one of these days, probably so I can sell it.

Update- cleaning was a success! I cleaned and lubed all the pots and switches and both channels work now. I want to clean the front panel and knobs before reassembling. Then I'll test it with some real speakers.

  • My CA1000 had a stuck Class A/B switch. They can get stuck in class A if switched back and forth with the power on. I picked up an upgraded switch from a Yamaha specialist on another forum. My amp has sounded great with every pair of vintage Polks I have tried with the Monitor 7's being my favorites.
  • Another update. The unit is all clean, inside and out and I was looking forward to testing it on my Klipsch CF-4s against my Fisher 500c. But then I plugged it in and didn't have the right channel!

So it looks like the preamp coupling switch in the back is still wonky. When I bypass the switch and run RCAs from the preamp to the amp jacks everything works fine. I may try to clean the coupling switch again but is there any reason why I couldn't just keep it hooked up the way it is now? I may make some short interconnects and stop worrying about the switch altogether.

You can use jumper in place of the switch. You could also Y off the pre-outs, and feed a separate power amp in another room.
