Record Cleaning Fluid Recipe? - RCM

Hi all -

Anyone care to share a magic elixir that you've been using for a vacuum based RCM?

Hoping to not have to store Tergitol in a fridge, etc as my RCM (Nitty Gritty MiniPro1) has a reservoir for fluid that certainly wouldn't be refrigerated and sits for relatively long periods of time.

Currently using Pure2, which allegedly doesn't need a rinse - so the lower maintenance the better.

Many thanks!

I use MoFi PLUS Enzyme Cleaner - on old records then VPI cleaner which I didnt know you need to refrigerate for long storage until you mentioned it....then I use distilled water to rinse..can't skip the rinse ED ;)

Have tried some MoFi ONE which I think doesn't need rinsed but I still did..

    Have not tried home formula's!

lots of different stuff on Music Directs site and here is one to check out

I like to do a rinse with clean distilled water no matter what I use to clean.

I just keep my bulk Tergitol S3 and S9 in a dark spot in the basement. IIRC sunlight is the worst thing for it. I've never refrigerated the mix. You can also buy some great products. Tergitol works great and is very cost effective provided you can purchase it in small enough quantities.

I read there was a single Tergitol that embodied the S3/S9 combo, perhaps it was Ken that posted that here once upon a time?

I just use the Pure 2 without a rinse.

That sounds familiar to me as well.

I remember reading and posting in a couple threads about the Tergitol record cleaning formula. We need to find one of those and see if we can get it made a sticky, as the topic comes up every few months.

Hahahaha!! Calling me out on the rinse Darryl! I Love it! Lazy I guess! Good suggestions - thank you - and a bit more cost effective than the Pure2 as well.

Paul that's exactly what I've been doing - Pure2 no rinse, but my machine cleans both sides at once, so a rinse would mean flipping the record too (oh, the horror!)

Scomp & Strider - the Tergitol combo sounds interesting - we may have to summon up @KennethSwauger and see if he can help us! If it doesn't need refrigeration, I'm game to try!

Thanks all for the ideas so far!

This is where I bought my Tergitol, at Ken's recommendation:

Here's one of the threads I was thinking of:

    http://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/67762/record-cleaning/p1

It has Ken's recipe for the cleaning fluid. I never got around to mixing a batch myself.

  • I believe you can use Tergitol S7, which is a blend of S3/S9 if you use this I imagine you would use 4 teaspoons in a gallon of distilled water. Just keep in a fairly dark place, no need to refrigerate.
Since I use a steam pre-wash, I followup the cleaning with a steam rinse and have great results.
