Just received my SACD from Voltz (thanks brother you're awesome) spinning it now, on my autographed by Matt Polks Denon 2910 ( just bragging a little bit) listening to Why Worry. And now Ride Across The River man oh man does it sound great.

I remember the first time I heard SACD I was floored. I purchased the Pioneer Elite DV-47a the day it came out. I preordered it from Pioneer when I use to work for a company called Soundex in Willow Groove Pa. Man I was so into it as it also did DVD AUDIO. That also sounds amazing.
To this day I have always purchased ONLY DVD and lately Blu ray players with SACD AND DVD AUDIO abilities. I had mostly Pioneer Elite's but I also had a Cambridge Audio Azur model as well. Killer player it was.

Today honestly I haven't spun a music disc in quite some time. I'm into high Rez music on the computer connected VIA USB running 24 / 192 stuff. I think it's every bit as good as what SACD AND DVD AUDIO was then and better as I can listen to whatever I want without changing disc's.

I just bought my first high sacd player today and cannot wait to get a few cds with music I like and give the format a proper try. I have heard a couple of sacds a long time agao and was very impressed on the way everything came through and the spereration.

Well still loving the SCAD, Picked up a few more disks including DSOTM and I must say it's a great way to listen to music, traditional I would listen to two channel except for occasionally putting on a BD concert which is really good for the most part.
But listening to the two SCAD,s list above that I have heard hundreds of times in two channel and now in remaster for SCAD 5.1 is truly a fantastic experience.

    How did you know
  • Both SACD and DVD-A were excellent formats. I personally prefer SACD as it is higher resolution and you don't have to turn your monitor on to select which audio format you want to play like on DVD-A. I have also been downloading hi-rez music including DSD. The Oppo BDP-103 will play those files and stream them from my backup hard drive and computer in two channel and five channel. Multichannel DSD sounds AWSOME!!

The Oppo doesn't do DSD natively, it converts to PCM if I'm not mistaken.

103 and 105 do native DSD via analog out.

Hmmm.....my understanding is the 103 specifically can only do DSD by passing it on through HDMI to something else that can handle it. Asking the 103 to handle it converts to PCM.

Unless there has been an update to the software along the line, which seems to be the case on further inspection.

What's the difference if the receiver/DAC/whatever does the conversion vs the Oppo?

Sorry, I personally can't say if there's a difference since I have not tried the HDMI out. Not even sure my pre/pro can handle DSD.

Analog using Oppo DAC sounds very good to me (103 and 105 to AV pre/pro and 105 to amp).

Depends on the quality of the product. If you let the receiver do decoding, that's if it can, your using the dacs in the receiver and the Oppo is just passing it along.

If the Oppo does it, your using the dacs in the Oppo, and analog output stages of it also. May be a difference in sound....depending which is the better quality product and of course, your ears.

I see in the first paragraph you indeed need a firmware upgrade, good to know for those who own a 103 or 105.

My NAD T-758 can not handle DSD, so I have to hook up my 103 using analog cables to get any sound with DSD, as the oppo is doing the decoding....and it can not be done via hdmi, it has to be analog.

Actually it can, you have to use the HDMI port 2, and the receiving piece on the other end needs to do the decoding.

Canada post has been awful lately, took over a week for a package to hit Calgary from Vancouver, I could drive there in 10 hours. They almost never meet their delivery standard, and have been routinely a few days late.
