Prayers for our family cat

I'm asking for some prayers or good vibes this weekend.

Our family cat has been acting weird and my wife took her to the vet and we just got back some bad news that her liver is starting to fail.

Shes a 4 year old cat thats always been in good health so we were not ready for this news. She's on some medicine in hopes its going to kickstart things and that she will make a full recovery, but from the information I've been relayed the odds may be long.

I would appreciate any good vibes or thoughts sent.

Besides just having to make a potential end of life decision for our cat (and then be there with her when that happens), we also are struggling on how to explain our 2.5 year old that her best friend the cat is very very sick.

Then if it densest turn around try to explain that to her.

So any good thoughts and prayers much appreciated.

Wow, sorry to hear the news :( especially at 4 years old...did the vet say if she ate something? I do applaud your decision to be there at the end if need be. We called out our vet to put our cat of 21 years old to sleep. while it helped us out emotionally it was more for her to not put her through a car ride she was always stressed out about and then to have her put to sleep. Here's hoping you don't have to do that and sparing your daughter, at least for some years in the future, for the inevitable.

    Good luck!!

Sorry to hear about the cat, Dan. Hopefully, she will be able to pull through this. I do not envy you one bit of having to explain this to your daughter.

Sorry to hear that Dan. I can tell you that I had a dog a few years back that the vet told me had gall bladder failure and it was a 99% chance she'd die within 24 hours, the gall bladder was going to burst, and she'd suffer a horribly painful death, so I should put her down and keep her from suffering further. I said that ain't happening what else can we do? She said in a somewhat cynical manner that we could try intravenous antibiotics and fluids and "maybe she'd be the wonder dog." Well, after a few weeks of treatments several times a week she started improving and awhile later she was back to normal. Keep hope alive.

Well we did some googling at sites that appeared as legit as you can be on the Internet lol.

They are all in agreement that this issue "may" be fixable if we can get her to start eating again.

For now we are syringe feeding her every 2-3 hours and trying to get 9 oz of high protein into her a day. She's on meds to increase her appetite and it's a good sign she seems to want to eat (lunch meat is is fav) but when it comes to actually eating and swallowing it she just doesn't feel like it.

When I had liver failure it was the same way. Food didn't sound good.

We are giving it to Wednesday and then will get more blood work done. If things are going in the right direction we will continue on this course. If it's not we have to re-evaluate and make some decisions.

I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

Thoughts and prayers sent your way. I had to syringe feed my cat last year as we were close to losing her (she's fine now) so I know what you're going through. Those little people in fur coats are very special.

Sorry to hear that Dan, best wishes for a speedy hopeful recovery.

I would think that's somewhat unusual for a 4 year old cat. Is she an outside cat ? Maybe something she's licking in the house poisonous ? Floor cleaners, etc. ?

Wish you guys all the best. Surprised at this as when I was there she seemed fine.

FYI, a few months back my daughters cat just stopped eating.
It was at a time when we were dog sitting for 2 little mutts and the cat was sneaking some of the dog food and it was also at the same time, the cat caught a mouse and munched on it some.

Out vet did blood work and he had an infection in her pancreas.
They gave us some antibiotics and different cat food, it took a few weeks and now he's back to his fat, moody, grumpy self..

    All the best during this.

    Dan,
I'd be looking around the house for something the cat may have gotten into. There is a chemical in artificial sweeteners that attacks the liver in cats and is found in many Candies. Halloween was not too long ago, kids candy maybe ? Look under the beds to see if the cat dragged anything there to eat. If you can nail it down some, the course to treat her can be more specific.

Shes showing more interest in food.

We've decided on a slightly radical course of action in that we are force feeding her high in protein soft food. It seems to be working, though she doesn't enjoy being syringe fed and put in a "cat jacket" so a single person can feed her. She's NOT declawed, so its for our safety lol....

We are giving her 9 oz of food a day and she has another vet checkup on Friday.

However there are some good signs, she ate a bit of her regular food this morning and some ham out of my hand.

So we are hoping we can kickstart her liver with the food and get her back.
