One word of advice for all the folks that have generators.
Don't use them at night or if it's very quiet. Lights attract Zombies and so does the sound of a generator.
There are many types of Zombies. Here in the big city they like to kill people and take their stuff.
For the gun fans. Guns are loud. Get a bow and arrow and practice, practice, practice.
They are quiet and you can recover and reuse arrows. Just make sure you know how to use it and have spares for all the wear parts. -
And it doesn't hurt to wear a ghille suit wherever you go

Plus, if you use a bow, your character gets renewed every season so you get to survive a long time.
Seriously, best quick bang for the buck item for beginning preppers might be the LifeStraw. Makes contaminated water drinkable. -

Pfft.....you'll be the first one to die in that TV series.
Anyone lying by a river, acting like Augustus Groop, trying to drink the water that a zombie peed in upstream is easy pickings. Do yourself a favor and rub your cheek fat with Cocoa Butter....they like that. Or so i'm told....
Lifestraw says 99.9%........tell that number to all the 16year olds who are pregnant and see what they say. 0.1% will still make you a zombie!Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!! -
It's worse than that. 99.9% is a removal rate of three logs; sounds impressive... but... suppose there are one billion bacteria (which is quite possible) in a liter of water. removing 99.9% of 1 x 10^9 bugs leaves 1 x 10^6 of 'em. That'd be (cue Dr. Evil voiceover) one million bacteria.
Plus, what all doesn't it remove?
Interestingly, the long-time industry standard in point-of-use water purification, the Millipore filtration system (now a very broad product range indeed) was, I have been taught, invented by the... umm... Germans (well, some Germans) during the unpleasantness of the 1930s and 1940s, so that the troops could purify water for drinking in the field. On maneuvers, you know?
EDIT: in my (more or less erstwhile) business, we generally tried to engineer viral removal capacity of 10 to 13 "logs", i.e., purification processes that would enable a reduction in virus levels of 10^10 to 10^13-fold. That's, umm... 99.99999999% to 99.99999999999% levels of reduction.
The government regulatory agencies would find these levels acceptable (probably).

Kerosene heaters are also very efficient, and ultra-clear burning types can be safely used indoors. Downside; "K-1" kerosene is expensive. Since our pellet stove is electricity dependent, I have 2 large high BTU kerosene heaters that can heat a large room quickly.
The big thing to remember is, not only do you need the equipment, you need supplies to maintain that equipment---whatever it is. White rice and dried beans packed correctly are a VERY good choice for long term food storage. See youtube for proper methods of storing. It would only take a few (food grade) 5 gallon buckets of each to last you months at a very low cost. Something to think about.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
Forget a "zombie apocolypse" just imagine how you would be affected by just a 1 week electrical outage.........it's just good common sense to prepare. The new ones are all computer driven, which is nice for temp control and even heating, but bad if you lose electricity. Even newer wood stoves are fan-driven to better force heat into the room better. It's a trade-off, but the distro fan units are far superior for heating. Amp draw is very low, so my 4000 watt generator would have no problem powering it during an outage---where my forced air furnace (propane) would be dead in the water.
To illustrate the savings, our first year in the house we spent $550 (avg) a month on propane to use the central air furnace; compare that to $240 for the ENTIRE winter the next year for pellets for the stove. The pellet stove also heats the house faster. We have a Harman P68.

Holy smokes, that's what you guys on propane spend a month to heat the joint ? I'd move before handing over that kinda cash.

The energy density of LPG is fairly low (compared, e.g., to kerosene or heating oil); it's fairly inexpensive on a per gallon basis, but not so much so on a per-BTU (per-kcal) basis, methinks.
We put LPG-fueled (hot water) heat in the new house; in many respects I do like it, but it's not inexpensive. It gets COLD here in the wintertime, so the annual fuel bill's pretty substantial.
Our daughter & son-in-law just installed a good old fashioned (no electronics, but brand-new and efficient) wood stove at their new-to-them house about 1/2 hour away from ours... it's got me thinking. Wood's messy and tedious, but effective and it's a nice, cozy heat (especially in a smaller house, or for a large contiguous space).

Pellet stoves have the advantage of inexpensive fuel (apprx $5/40lb bag) and far less clean up/day-to-day maintenance. I have to empty my ash pan about once a month. You scrape the burn-pot a bit, and hit the "on" switch; and of course keep the pellet hopper full. Every spring after my last fire, I give a thorough cleaning (takes about an hour) and unplug it until the next fall.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2
