Hi, I just was handed a pair of Monitor 10B's. One of them need s 2 new woofers (Polk number MW 6503) is there an equivalent replacement available anywhere? What would be close to the Polk part at a cheaper price? Seen many posts on crossovers, where does one find those?
Thanks for any help.

I believe Polk still manufactures and sells brand new 6503's give them a call. They are $50 shipped a piece.
There are no suitable substitutes.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Thanks for the info! I did not know Polk would still sell parts, I will be calling them. I did see that Midwest Speaker sells the 6503 replacement part (hope it's ok to use another companies name) so that is an option as well.
Still curious that so many people have posted rebuilding, modifying or replacing their crossovers as well. I will be reading more. -
I knew MW sold a Peerless clone but didn't know they make the midwoofers too, thanks for sharing that. I'd rather buy real ones from Polk but that's useful info.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

MW has them listed as Polk's under the official part # . I'm assuming the factory sells to them. I'll let you know what Polk says, I have email in with them.

Call Polk customer service and tell them you are a club polk member. You can order brand new MW6503 drivers for $48 each + free shipping (last time checked) they look a little different than the originals (no exposed leads on the cones) The important thing is you must trim around the screw holes very carefully or you risk damaging the rubber surround . From what others say musically they are the same.Yamaha RXA1030, Yamaha CD-S2100, Yamaha AS-2200, Bluesound node 2i

thanks Randy, I will call them Monday. Price looks great! Did not know about trimming around the screws, I assume the part to trim is on top of the ring where the screw would be coming in contact with the housing?
-
Yep!! a sharp razor blade will do nicely. You want to trim them to look like the one you removed.Yamaha RXA1030, Yamaha CD-S2100, Yamaha AS-2200, Bluesound node 2i

took a close look at the old one, I see where they were cut. np, an Exacto knife should do nicely.

thought I'd post a pic of what I'm playing with.

Thanks, found the label off the driver laying in the cabinet, but only one, nothing on the other driver. Other unit had both labels firmly attached. Go figure.

You should re-arrange the Dacron while you're in there. Roll up and tack in place those "pant legs", so they're behind the woofers. The bottom section should be empty.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Keep the advice coming, I'll get some more pics up. Both units had the Dacron filling arranged in exactly the same way, sort of like a funnel from the drivers to the radiator. I just assumed it was as Polk intended.

Nope, push it back up where it belongs then staple it to the walls.Political Correctness'.........defined

sure do appreciate the advice from everyone, can't say it enough, Thanks!!
I understand how it should be, my question, did Polk put it in wrong or did it shift over the years? Like I said, both speakers are the same, there is another rolled bundle pushed to the top behind the tweeter, sort of above where the woofers sit. I'll get some more pics up.... -
I think this shows it fairly well, just thought you guys would like a look. The labels on the 6503's are dated 1987. As far as I can tell, no one has opened these up until I did a few days ago. Those grills in the pic are from the Advent Maestro's, which are the next project, seems all those need is a re-foam of the woofers. -
btw, RandyCroissant, called Polk, nice discount for mentioning Club Polk and free shipping, thanks for the advice, I would not have known about it.
-
you do not want any behind the passive it will go above.

Like the gents mentioned and I'll add a little. My 2bs had three pieces of polly fill each two were rolls and one looked like pants. Put the pants in first at the back one leg up behind each MW then put a roll in right behind the drivers, push it all up and kind of roll the pant so none is in the PR chamber you can add a couple staples to secure it.Yamaha RXA1030, Yamaha CD-S2100, Yamaha AS-2200, Bluesound node 2i

Pull the "pants" out. Roll up each "leg", and stuff it under the woofer openings. This leaves a flap, that can be tacked/stapled to the sides and the center brace. Keeps everything neat and in place.Home Theater/2 Channel:

will do. Thanks everyone!!

BTW, divvy up the two new woofers, one in each cabinet in the mirror position.
This way they'll balance out should there be any difference in the performance of the new vs old woofers.
And don't forget to apply some Loctite Power Grab on the old woofers so their magnets won't shift.Home Theater/2 Channel:

went and played around with it after you guys mentioned it was out of place, it does just nicely roll back up. What was supposed to be holding it in position? Faith?
