I think I ruined Christmas

Well I have to say that I love sharing my thoughts here and miss the colorful replys from everyone.

With the thread title you may think I done something wrong but the fact is I tried my best this year to do everything right and make it great but it backfired in drastic fashon.

Here is the back story, my borther and sister are going through hard times. My brothers 18 wheeler had a catastrophic engine failure so he had to get a loan for a new one. With the hardships going on I thought I would buy the kids flat screen tv's, game consoles and the younger ones razor crazy carts etc. I even bought great gifts for my mother and sister, fit bit charges flex and hillbilly Armani (under armour) for everyone as a store had a huge sale.

Well as soon as my brother and sister saw all the gifts they were like what the? Then my nephew cracked his new xbox one and he was pissed. After my niece and nephew started ripping the paper off the other second large present my brother stood up and shouted " If thats a flat screen TV I am going to punch you right in the fkin face"

Well it was and the whole unboxing just turned to horror. There was so much tension and the happy go lucky day turned very tense. Shortly after that I found out my sister was in the back room talking crap about me saying I am always trying to one her with her kids but thats just not true.

I wanted to get everyone good gifts and spend a little exta this year because I love them and not to make myself look flashy. It was everyone else that had to suffer though and its not the way to address things, my nephew feels real guilty now for getting a tv an xbox but the lil dudes 14 and doesnt even have a tv in his room and is using my old hand me down xbox 360 I gave him 2 years ago on Christmas.

Anyways nothing got resolved and everyone is mad at me still.

I picked up some Makers Mark "46" wonderful stuff...not that it can solved you problems but it can't hurt!

but seriously all you can do is what you think is best...lord I given gifts I swore where perfect only to later realize how blind I am and will were humans and we ain't perfect...Hang on man it can only get worse...or better :) Nothing in life every went as I has planned on.

You tried and if you know it, then just relax...that all you could do.

Christmas time has always been a little brutal on everyone! Hang Tough!

P.s. The best gift I eve got was a waffle iron, it is all metal and will burn you if you touch it, makes a perfect waffle after 25 years probably ..go figure!

Well what was funny was little Adi, she's only 7 and she was even picking up on the animosity and said to me as she held her razor scooter " I dont want this, take it back" I know she loved it but she was wanting to make her dad happy by saying that as she is very smart. The next day me and my oldest nephew were in the back room playing on star wars and he was telling me all the things his mother was saying about me in particular to how I dress. Thats country folks for ya man, if you aint wearing baggy jeans and a hoodie then your obviously showing off and trying to be flashy.

  • I agree, however one should ALSO take into acount the fragile human EGO.
THAT is the center of all of these problems and as long as that Elephant is in the room,NOTHING is going to get solved here.

TIME is the only thing that will help for now and then you can have a talk with them AFTER all of these trials that they are having have passed.
  • Skip
I never said how much time before addressing the Elephant in the room.
I am merely suggesting time to let the tempuratures drop a few degrees before addressing the elephant in the room. Anger, jealousy, bruised ego's and just plain ignorance(*of someone else's intentions*) sometimes make people shut their hearing off completely. If you don't let them cool down enough before trying to talk to them,it may only make things worse.

However how much time needs to pass varies GREATLY from one person to another.....................

    Skipper hit it.

Discuss with the parents first. No more need be said. You may have had good intentions PFB, but time to use some old fashioned common sense and courtesy.

I'll drink to that!! Their spoiled brats and it's the parents fault, children haven't a clue on the meaning of humble..

Then you're punishing the kids. They're not at fsult. The presents should have been discussed with the parents first but the dad should not have reacted the way he did in front of the kids. Two wrongs don't make a right.

That family should have said "ain't it nice to have a rich uncle!" and leave it at that. What ever happened just being grateful? You didn't ruin Christmas, your family did. Next year give them bubkis as save yourself the grief and the money. Or hell you wanna be my uncle? I have no family, I have disowned them for the scores of Christmases among other things that they have ruined.

It seems like we live in a damned if you do and damned if you don't world now.
Here we have have someone who can do a bit more than others at x-mas get crapped on. I say take it with appreciation as it may never happen again.

His brother should have shut his trap in front of the family and swallowed his pride. It's about the kids. Nothing more

If I wasn't able to give my kids the best best x-mas and someone came along and did it, I'd be grateful and deal with my financial insecurities on my own.

I was just in that situation. I'm very gracious for those who helped, including Enders who gave my kid a gift he won't put down.

    Oh shame on Enders ;)

Of all the things to complain about on Christmas...

I'll take the flat screen and xbox if the parents want to cry about it. It's not like you bought the kids a car or anything ridiculously lavish.

Sad to hear pfb. I grew up without Christmas at a young age (parents couldn't afford it). Imagine what is like going to school after holidays and lying to all your friends about the gifts you got because you were embarrassed. It's a shame kids these days are so ungrateful.

Sounds a lot like the scene with Vince Vaughn at his dad's house in Four Christmases. Since I doubt most of your stories are true, I'll assume that this one is no different.

And yes, I know my man card is in jeopardy for watching Four Christmases:)

Ha. I have been teased by Txcoastal and Russman for picking up Harry Potter collection for xmas. Lol.

To be quite honest, PFB post is actually a breath of fresh air.

My take. It is his family, siblings... They should know each other very well. If not. It is what it is. If the family could only afford a couple beans for xmas, should I only bring a can of beans? If I don't have children and my closest do, I will love their children and spoil them when I could.

That's a fact. It is not about pity or one upping. They need to Grow up and you need to stop the projection of their insecurities on you. Plus 1 for PFB.

If you want to do something grand next year, discuss it with the parents first. Maybe give them the chance to be 'santa' and for you not to be the badass uncle or whatever.

Talk it out PFB, before it gets out of hand for next year. You are only distancing yourself from your brother and sister if you don't. Let them know your intensions are not to create family barriers. Tune it down a little, swallow your pride if you have to and apologize for not discussing it with the parents first. Sometimes, smallest things create a rift.

Wow, up until now I thought that was only a figure of speech... ;)
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Its the kids that would suffer and its always expected now that I give half decent gifts. I have to go back there tonight and stay for new years and I am not happy about some things. The TV's are still sitting out at my moms ranch as they said they never had room and my nephew wants to play star wars before he goes back to school. Here is the thanggg, I had to order them a Sharp led flat screen and pay for it at bestbuy and now drive out there with it because my brother found a good deal, and they will pay me later? Still no apologies from them either and have only had texts from them lol, thats messed up!
