If I hadn't worn my school tie, blazer and charcoal gray pants, I would have been sent home that day, then got a Saturday morning "detention". However, as a member of the "Combined Cadet Force" after school activity, I could shoot .303 rifle rounds into targets, straw dummies and the sandbags behind them (usually where my shots ended up !) as much as I wanted to.

Absurd. I'm at a loss for words.
In high school, a lot of kids would go deer, dove, rabbit hunting before class and then head on in. In the student parking lot alone was enough fire power to take down a small nation. Did we have the thought of using them on each other? Nope. Breach cleared and weapon stored.

I remember when t shirts were only allowed in PE.
And any shirt with a tail had to be tucked in.
    And now it's a news story when someone can't wear a T-shirt????

Sorry for my faux pas. ;)

It was noted in the report that students are to follow a dress code that is contained in the Secondary Student Handbook. Starting on page 20.
    DRESS AND GROOMING
The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Any article of clothing or grooming the principal or designee determines inappropriate or can reasonably be expected to cause disruption or interference with normal school operations is prohibited.
Violation of the student dress code include, but not limited to:

    1. Any clothing or apparel that:
    - is considered unsafe, dangerous, or a health hazard.
    - contains offensive or obscene symbols, signs, slogans, or words regarding any gender, cultural, religious, or ethnic values.
    - contains profanity or offensive words or symbols
    - contains language or symbols oriented toward violence, sex, drugs, alcohol or tobacco, or any other substance prohibited under Policy FNCF (Local).
    - is gang-related, which may include, but is not limited to:
    - chains
    - hair nets or bandanas
    - monikers or other gang markings including
    - notched eyebrows
    - spiked rings, bracelets or long earrings
    - jewelry or belt buckles with gang symbols
    - dropped suspenders
    2. Article of clothing or grooming listed below including, but is not limited to:
    - Bare midriffs or bare shoulders
    - Leotards, Spandex, mesh or leggings unless paired with fingertip length attire
    - Halter/crop tops, tank tops, sheer or see-through blouses, spaghetti straps
    - Shorts or skirts less than fingertip length
    - Tight or revealing clothing.
    - Sagging, baggy pants
    - Mouth piece for decorative purposes (grill)
    - Hair must be neat, clean and well groomed
    - Extremes in hair styles or length; mohawks, psychedelic colors; letters or designs shaved in the head
    - Painted faces, tattoos, stick-on skin tattoos. All tattoos must be covered.
    - Caps, hats, hoods, headgear, sunglasses
    - Nose rings, visible body or facial piercing
    - Earrings for males through the 8th grade
    - Nail polish for males
    - Bare feet
    - Facial hair, males must be clean shaven during class time through eighth grade
    - House shoes, pajamas, and blankets, pillows and stuffed animals
    - Any combination of clothing that law enforcement agencies currently consider gang-related. (These may change during the school year.)
A student whose clothing violates the dress code shall be assigned to in-school suspension either for the remainder of the day or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school.
“Repeated dress code offenses will result in more serious disciplinary action. Appropriate discipline procedures shall be followed in all cases in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.” Policy FO (Local) gives the general guidelines for discipline actions for the student code of conduct. Cheerleaders, drill team members and members of other performing groups are to remain dressed in proper attire during class time.

    The news story reported that:
Administrators say they did not reprimand the student, though they could have required him to change or assigned him in-school suspension. They say they only required him to zip up his jacket.

Doesn't the school district have the right to have a school dress code and the parents and students agree to it?

Many public and private places have dress codes.
Does this infringe on First Amendment rights?

Some interesting discussion on this here.

Some famous cases on this subject include:
Long v. Bd. of Education of Jefferson County, Kentucky

Oleson v. Bd. of Education of Sch. Dist., No. 228

Chalifoux v. New Caney Independent Sch. Dist.

According to that list, not much they can wear without being offensive to someone....and that's the point. Are they all to look like Arthur Anderson accountants ? Which if you ever saw a bunch of them look like clones of one another.

Nobody subscribes to having no standards, obviously you need some, but it has pretty much been taken too far in this PC world.

Seems to me anyway, sitting in the cheap seats, that a school who supposedly is to promote INDIVIDUAL learning and understanding, goes against it's own charter by removing ALL things that make them individual.

....and I highly doubt any parent had input in creating that student handbook.

Actually, we are doing a disservice to the kids by trying to protect them from everything under the sun. Keeping them in a bubble, force feeding them dubious information. Then we wonder why they have such a hard time adjusting after they leave school.

My grandkids elementary school has banned anything super hero too. Too much violence they say....as the parents pick them up, take them home, and the first thing they turn on is a super hero cartoon or movie. Play games with all sorts of violence.

Tom and Jerry cartoons.....dang cat is always looking to do that poor mouse harm.
Superman....always uses violence to stop violence, shame on him.
    Batman.....same thing
    Sponge Bob.....oops....also too violent
Roadrunner.....has a civil lawsuit against that coyote....and another against ACME corporation for selling him weapons.

The real world doesn't work in a way todays schools project. Life is full of pitfalls, unfairness, bullies, discrimination....how are they suppose to deal with it as adults if they never encounter such as a child ? Short answer is of course, they can't.

More hard hitting news from....Fox News.
I dunno man....the divide in this country is pretty
scary. I just watched a video on the internet where an older white haired lady explained her conspiracy theory of a UN / State Department backed program is spending tax dollars to relocate dangerous Muslims into YOUR COMMUNITY. Of course, no sources of information were cited and it was produced by an organization backed by some PAC. This was after last night, where I spent a solid hour researching a claim on Facebook which attempts to infuriate voters based on a bunch of false tax increase claims....to of course vote their side. Again, no sources of information were cited....it was basically a photo of a piece of paper outlining the half truths. The worse thing about this gem was, although the tax rates were corrct, the fact that the highest tax rate applies to people or families making over $400,000 a year was conveniently left off. Dear God....we are going to increase the tax rate from 35 to 39 percent on this income bracket.....I wish I had that "problem".
    End of rant....

That is quite the list. Are all schools this controlling now-a-days? No mohawks or colored hair? What's offensive about that? I must have gone through one of the last generations of classes that wasn't like this. Idiotic.

Bravo, you are absolutely right. Case-by-case based thinking requires intelligence and emotional investment; that's more effort than some are willing to give.

Let's not all get our panties in a bunch because of some PC reporting. There are numerous cases where being PC becomes an "absurdity" and there could be no real "humor" if we adhered to it religiously (and I'm about as far from a conservative as you can get on this site, lol). The Left loses it when the Right goes off on some intractable, ahistorical, judgment, and the Right is incensed when the Left PCs them to death. This battle is getting a little old for me, personally.

Do I cringe when PCness is applied with no regard to "context"? You bet! Am I tired when anything PC is seen as bad, sure! There are some things we should be careful about in our speech and behavior (respectful), and then there is the ridiculous. And with regards to fake space guns, T-shirts and Star Wars-give me a break already! It's a Sci-fi T-shirt for God's sake!

Whatever powers that be have done a good job of dividing this country. I don't know how many countless times I hear or read the words Left, right, conservative , liberal in a day. Most times not in a very flattering light are these terms used. Like the flag of the great state of Kentucky reads "United We Stand, Divided We Fall"

Amen bro....but don't ya think with the divided state we are in today, that it's by chance....coincidence ? It's done on purpose, only under turmoil can you do things you normally couldn't.

We seem to go through these cycles whenever the current power structure is threatened. Both parties at each others throats for power, but when the people want some of it back is when you see both parties uniting to prevent that. It's easy when your made afraid to give up things in return for safety, all too hard to get those things back though.
