Vintage Monitor 5jrs and Monitor 7s

  • Lol just now getting ready to put that one on, been listening to a little Puttin On The Ritz on vinyl. I have been in a Zappa mood today, I love my fives and I really like the 7s they just sound perfect for me. The 10s are probably too much but if I can get them cheap I will even though I dont need them. I just love all my Zappa vinyl, the new remasters are great but most of my stuff is original and in great shape and they sound fantastic.
  • So,
I just finished fiddling around with my Monitor 5's placement wise.
I brought the larger 5's a few more inches forward, which cleared up the muddiness a bit, but the funny thing was, when I switched the phase polarity on my subwoofer, it tightened up the bass significantly.
I was always under the assumption that one was to switch it until you heard the bass at it's loudest and that was the correct phase.
I did the opposite, then raised the sub volume a hair and it sounds much better !
My next trick is to make a couple of acoustifoam bass traps in the corners of the alcove where my sub sits.
I made two little ones for the 5 Jrs, which have to live in the rear corners of my room.
If I ever win this 1 billion dollar lottery coming up, I'll build my new music room around my Monitor 5's
  • So I finally got my Monitor 5A's today. I'll only be using one of them for my center in my bedroom to go between my Monitor 10A's. Here is a shot of the 5A's

I'll hook them both up to make sure they both work. Then take one of them and replace the current, smaller 5Jr+

This will give me two things, a more powerful center channel that can put out much more bass than the 5Jr+ as well as add a Peerless Tweeter in the center position to compliment the L & R that currently also have Peerless Tweeters!

    I'll keep you fellas updated!

  • I'm a stereo guy myself, but always thought that the center channel was more for dialogue than music ?
If that's the case, maybe the smaller Jrs (or maybe even a pair of Mini-Monitors) would make a better center speaker.
Someone school me if I'm wrong.

Can't have too big of a center channel. Some people, usually those with projectors, even use the same full size towers they use for their main L/R speakers. I use full size Monitor 5's as my center channel too, but unlike OP I even use both of them.

The Polk CS1000P center channel has two subwoofers built into the darn thing IIRC.

that might be the case for you, but these are for me and I have my reasons for wanting the way I want it. I would not presume to tell you what is right or wrong. also, for the record, that center channel puts out whatever is decided to be placed in it by the audio engineers who mix movies, music, tv, whatever. that 5A, for me, will be perfect.

nightfall, your setup looks great, love the complete 5 channel Peerless sound system you've amassed! as for not using both, the way I have my furniture setup, I can't use both, but, the one will be just fine for me in the bedroom use! I do love the way you have situated the two 5A's what a stroke of genius! B)

i collect disney infinity game figures (don't play the game but love the figures) and they occupy some of the space on the a/v furniture and they are there to stay. here is a shot of the bedroom fronts and the 5A is not yet in place as the center, but, it will be as of tomorrow night! ;):p

  • Sorry if I offended you, I was commenting on what I understood to be a rule of thumb on center channels (apparently I was wrong)
That's why I added "somebody school me" to the end of that post.
    I'll consider myself schooled.

That's a common misconception. The Center isn't just dialog, it anchors everything that's on screen. I recently connected subwoofers to the Center pre-out on my receiver, and the amount of deep bass present is amazing.

  • I'm just a caveman I guess, as I never really wanted to have anything more than a stereo set up, in fact up until recenly, I usually kept it down to two speakers. (I also haven't a cell phone and get my TV broadcasts from a home made antenna)
I have to admit though, I've got this 4 speaker system going on now that blows me away sonically !
Just got off the phone with Polk and my new RDO-194's are on their way for the main Monitor 5's.
By the way Dave, I'm just about 20 minutes north of you and if I find another pair of polk crossovers, I may just have you do your thing to them.
