Im growing mine out, might try letting it really go.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with a brush in cream or paste that keeps the strays a little neater looking, and sort of keeps a the beard shaped like it is after a hot shower and a wet brushing in the morning.
There are ten tons of products at cvs for hairdos, and some would probably be ok.
would gladly buy something over the internet if it is something you have used with good results.
thanks.

Creams are for sissies. Be a man and use Pine Tar. I personally matte my mustache hairs down with snot and let all of the food fallout help tame the goatee hairs.
When i grow it out long(er), i use a hair trimmer (head, not face), where you can use the larger settings to even the whole job out. Also use scissors a couple times a week to grab the quick stray.
The real issue is when your nose hairs and 'stache hairs decide to have a civil war....

I was thinkin -- I've been growin' mine for about 30 years now, but that's not what he meant by "long", is it?

I keep my beard close, but I would imagine any hair conditioner would help keep it from looking unkept. It takes a while to settle in and look right, just like growing your hair long.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Extra virgin organic Coconut oil. Keeps it soft, while also moisturizing your skin. Smells nice too. I don't have a beard now, but did, my beard hair grows fast and thick. Those creams and oils from beard shops are priced ridiculously for a tiny tin of it. I wouldn't waste my money on that.2 channel:

I have found that American Male hair thickening shampoo and the matching conditioner works great on mine. Found at your hair cuttin place or CVS, Walgreen's. Look at my avatar. Stunningly gorgeous! You guys like wearing fly catchers on your face ? I dunno man, starting to worry about some of you.
Flavor savers, Tony. Not fly catchers. Rookie move, there. -

Mine won't grow long even given an infinite amount of time, I fear.
That said, I never really had the nerve to find out...

I use the same conditioning shampoo for the beard I use on my head. My beard stays at around 14". Have not trimmed it in years.
-
I don't have a full beard, because the sides get ratty looking. I've had a goatee for 20+ years however. I have to keep it no more than 1/4"-3/8" otherwise it goes wild.
I'd use regular conditioner on it, rather than over-priced specialty beard products.
If you comb or brush it into shape while still damp from the shower, it will usually stay that way once it's dry.Home Theater/2 Channel:

If I wanted to be neat and clean I wouldn't have a beard. I wear a beard as a warning "Follow. But! Follow only if ye be men of valor! For the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel, that no man yet has fought with it... and lived! BONES of full fifty men lie *strewn* about its lair! So! Brave knights! If you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth..."

I have had a beard since 1983. Not super long. I get it trimmed when I get a haircut. Every four months. Plus now it's all white. Just like Santa.

A friend of mine runs this company, has a lot of nice beard products as well as cool t- shirts and hats. Mention my name when ordering and maybe he will give me a free shirt to karma here.

Soup and bread crumbs! Tough to keep those out. When I had a full beard I used to let it grow out. The purpose was NOT to bother with it. And I didn't. No special treatment, no combing, no grooming. Just wash and dry in the shower. Usually, you're going for the wild look. I may return to that soon. These days it's just a goatee which I do hit with a little dye a few times a year because when your face has no wrinkles, why let too much gray take ten years away from you. Why look your age when you can appear ten or more years younger? Especially when you're teaching youngsters all the time!
That's also why I don't keep the full beard, the goatee is less gray whereas the full beard is very gray on the sides. For a lot of people they begin to gray at the temples and the upper beard. For some of us, the beard grays first, and the hair later. For others their hair goes first then their beards (can't identify with that). [The above was not brought to you by Kate Turabian or Strunk and White! Grammarians are so anal retentive!]
Beards leave trails of crumbs on kitchen tables, but that which is edible doesn't care!Currently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!

I play Santa at the hospital for any kids that may be there over the holidays.
When it comes to hair care products for beards I have always had good results with the basic products for hair care. Pick the product based on hair type. My hair is very dry so I use something to add moisture or my hair tangles and breaks when I brush my beard. I never got carried away with specialized beard care products preferring to keep it simple.
