Police Officer "GI Joe" Gliniewicz Staged His Own Death

Fox Lake is right down the road about 5 minutes from my house here in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Everyone was talking about this today.

I didn't know him. Pretty-sad really.

"Fox Lake Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz embezzled thousands of dollars from the Fox Lake Police Explorer program for seven years, and spent the money on such things as mortgage payments, travel expenses, gym memberships and adult websites, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Commander George Filenko said."

I feel for that family. Not only did they lose a husband and father, but also their dignity. Sad, sad state of affairs for all.

Agree TB... Saw some idiot on the tube news today and she was railing that his pension should be taken away from his wife and children. This "news" media is morally bankrupt.

I think you better check the law dude. The media has nothing to do with it. Just about every state revokes the pensions of police officers who are convicted of felonies. It's not mandatory in all states but most will do it.

Here's what Illinois state law says:

"Pensions of public employees and officials can be revoked for conviction of any felony related to official duties. Trustees of individual pension fund make final decision after conviction."

If you read the story, Gliniewicz embezzled thousands of dollars over seven years and spoke of framing the woman for DUI who uncovered the corruption and was heading up the investigation. He even spoke about murdering her and dumping her body in a local swamp.

He decided to commit suicide rather than face the music and end-up in prison. He might have also thought it would be a way to avoid felony conviction so his family could keep his pension.

After he staged his own death, the state ended-up spending over $300,000 of taxpayer dollars for all the SWAT teams and search operations that followed. I think they said like 100 "suspects" had to give DNA samples during the investigation. The town had a huge parade with Police officers from around the country in attendance. For days afterwards there were police helicopters constantly flying over my house on their way to Fox Lake searching for the "two white males and one black male" that Gliniewicz fabricated.

Why do you think he went to all the trouble to stage his own death? He did it so his family could keep his pension and he could avoid going to prison.

Personally I don't really think corrupt cops or their families deserve pensions. You can call me "morally-corrupt" too if you like.

I guess you think the families of politicians and all other public servants who commit felonies should get to keep their pensions too?

You have to remember that it's looking like this case not only involved embezzlement. It also involved possible conspiracy to frame another police official and maybe even conspiracy to commit murder.

To be clear I am not defending him as if he did what they say he did then he is a felon. I just don't understand what they hope to accomplish by punishing his children. I would hope they would find out if his wife new anything about it.

Why would his family end up on welfare? There are these things called jobs, she can go get one. She certainly won't be the only single woman raising her kids alone. And the kids will learn the important lesson that crime does NOT pay.

What about all the money he stole from the police department and the $300,000 it cost the taxpayers after he staged his own death to make it look like a homicide? All that money has to come from somewhere. ?

What about corrupt politicians? Should their families be entitled to pensions at the taxpayer's expense? Are you really "earning" a pension if you are betraying your sworn duty and the office your are supposed to be serving?

So you know she doesn't have a job? And you have convicted him and his family without a trial? Look if he is proven guilty in a court of law which I am not sure how you do after he is dead and his wife knew of his crimes then throw the book at them.... But let's not try him/her in the court of public opinion. Due process is everybody's right and we all know what has happened recently when matters were tried in the media.

I did not say it is the media's fault... but it seems the portrayal of the story in the media has convicted this man and his family without a trial.

Every criminal gets their day in court. I agree that the story sounds compelling.

An investigation is not a trial. He may very well have been a huge POS. But in this country an investigation needs to be validated by a trial. Again... I am not defending him or his alleged actions. But the possibility exists that perhaps someone else involved in the scandal may be taking advantage of his suicide and concluded an investigation that covers up additional involvement. And if something like this were to have occurred an impartial investigation followed by a trial would be the course that would need to be taken. It will take a judgment to take something away from somebody. And a judgment is handed down by a Judge and not an investigator. And yes I do believe in prosecuting law enforcement, politicians, celebrities, priests and anyone else who breaks the law. Prosecution means going in front of a Judge and Jury.

Problem is, how do you try dead man?

He legally can't stand trial, so this is all we have; the investigation. He screwed his own legacy and his family. It's sad, but we can't treat his family any differently than we would any other criminals family...

I feel bad for them if they knew nothing about it, but life sucks for a lot of people. Unfortunately they are saddled with this.

He was talking to someone is all those text messages and phone calls. I think the police already have a good idea who it was but haven't revealed that yet because of the ongoing investigation.

To the police departments merit, they took their time and followed the facts as they came. They don't make a habit of crucifying one of their own without being 100% on all the facts.

Still, his pension will most likely be denied and challenged in court. How you convict a dead person is beyond me. His life insurance will certainly be denied.

I don't understand all the concern over his pension though, when we have so many crooked politicians that collect them daily in this state. Even after only working one day, yes, one day and you get a pension. Focus on the big fish, not the small bait fish.
