My New Speakers

Approximately 18' deep x 50' wide. Basically, picture a living/dining/kitchen all open to each other in a straight line. The living room is on the far left and that is where the system is.
No need to imagine, you are describing our place. We have an open main level like that with 14' ceilings. Over 10,000 cubic feet, more if you count doors open into rooms on the upper level and the lighted lower level family room. I've had some great speakers here that were low bass humbled or 'owned' by the space. A south wall setup helps solve that by boxing speakers by corners but presents it's own set of issues to deal with.
I have two 12" subs that help with the nethers, but actually need 15" subs to get the 20-35Hz in the +- 3dB range. Why, cause I listen to music that has those frequencies.
Messing with sub placement helped to improve low bass at listening position. I'm going to try some angled or higher off the floor level placement one of these days. My room is a real good lesson in walk around and find where the low bass frequencies live, thrive and where they cancel. We are talking inches.
This pic hints at the open space to right. Subs are now between speakers and close to wall. That puts lengths of low bass waves in the sweet spot.

Nice layout. My dog has become a critical listener of my music at
high levels. He goes nuts barking at stuff he doesn't like. Not
sure what cats are thinking. -
Thanks!
Jasper is a hybrid, pals around with us like a dog would, an in your face cat. He listens, loves the mild jazz stuff, it soothes the savage beast, puts him to sleep. He has been known to help select albums.
He also loves a warm running/sounding amp..

How big is the room?
Approximately 18' deep x 50' wide. Basically, picture a living/dining/kitchen all open to each other in a straight line. The living room is on the far left and that is where the system is. So I have about 10' of clearance from the left speaker to the left wall and about 30' of clearance to the right.
Ceilings are vaulted about 11' at the peak.
Cmon man, be a real audiophile.... buy a new house for the express reason of better room layouts
That's next on the list after a baller subwoofer
In all honesty, I don't think the sound suffers much from the placement. Plenty of clearance on all sides. Just a bit more on the one.2 ChannelTurntable - VPI Classic 2/Ortofon 2M BlueAmplification - Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum II, Parks Audio Budgie PhonoSpeakers - GoldenEar Triton 17.2 Home TheaterDenon AVR-X3300W; Rotel RMB-1066; Klipsch RP-280F's, Klipsch RP-450C, Polk FXi3's, Polk RC60i; Dual SVS PB 2000's; BenQ HT2050; Elite Screens 120"Man CaveTurntable - Pro-Ject 2.9 Wood/Grado GoldAmplification - Dared SL2000a, McCormack DNA 0.5 DeluxeCD: Cambridge AudioSpeakers - Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary; LSiM 703; SDA 2A -
@SCompRacer
Great setup and gear (of course) We have a couple cats that like to sit on my lap and chill to the music. Only time they get weirded out is Floyd Animals with the dog barking
These speakers have more bass than the 705's and seem to fill the space nicely so far.2 ChannelTurntable - VPI Classic 2/Ortofon 2M BlueAmplification - Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum II, Parks Audio Budgie PhonoSpeakers - GoldenEar Triton 17.2 Home TheaterDenon AVR-X3300W; Rotel RMB-1066; Klipsch RP-280F's, Klipsch RP-450C, Polk FXi3's, Polk RC60i; Dual SVS PB 2000's; BenQ HT2050; Elite Screens 120"Man CaveTurntable - Pro-Ject 2.9 Wood/Grado GoldAmplification - Dared SL2000a, McCormack DNA 0.5 DeluxeCD: Cambridge AudioSpeakers - Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary; LSiM 703; SDA 2A -
Hello, hoch and racer,
Another cat lover/keeper here (notice, I did not say "owner"). Actually have 4 rescues.
Anyway, Jasper is handsome! As is that carved chest you have behind the sofa.
And, hoch, am very pleased to hear that the 90s are growing on you. I mean, from what I read, you made a heckuva good choice. And wonderful price, esp. given their upgrade.
As I had mentioned previously, I will be selling my very large Klipsch speakers soon. Made not nearly so "traumatic" by the fact that the RTi12s and the Infinity and Def Tech replacements sound wonderful to me already (1 1/2 weeks in).
What is it they say . . . "Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want." And so true, as how often do our "wants" change--and it seems to take so little to do that.

I wish there was someone or somewhere I could go listen to a pair of LSIM705's or even the flagship LSIM707. I listened to the LSIM703s and wondered how the floor models performed. Wish someone did a demo program with them. O well, sorry for your loss and congrats on one of my all time favorite Polk speakers. I love the LS90's and always wanted to grab a pair. Don't have any idea how they would compare to the LSIM's but I'm sure they are damn nice to you despite owning the new LSIM's.
In this case I'm willing to bet you didn't take to far of a step backwards.
If anyone wants to hear LSiMs and is in the OKC area, im open to demos. Please see my sig for equipment. -
How did I miss this thread! I wish I had more time to spend before I had to run back home. Great person, great music, overall a nice time! I was surprised at the amount of bass on them and the huge difference when we took the covers off. It became a completely different speaker. Hearing both on the same rig in the same room, I do not see it as a downgrade at all. Even though it's the same company, the sound is different vs the 705. Both are great sounding but, they are different from each other.
Now the question is the 90 better vs the 705? This one I am going to say depends on your personal preference. Both are good speakers. In my messed up room, the 705 actually sounded more like the PSB Imagine t2 in the mid and top end ( I like the t2) but the bottom end is lighter vs the T2 or the 90's but, they don't leave you wanting more either. Very balanced. The 90's look smaller in physical appearance but, they had no issues imaging and filling up Paul's room and filling it up. Heck we didn't even play with the placement! We just dropped them close to where the 705's were and they sounded right at home. The top end on the 705 is very different vs the 90's also. Personal preference. I could live with either speaker if my room was like better.
I tried to find a local place that had the 705 or 707 on hand to hear them first but, no one had it. They all said they could order it and return it if I didn't like them. I was taken by surprise that several polk dealers in my area did not carry this line or have them to demo.

Yeah, cats own you...lol It's great when you get their trust, become a member of the pack.SCompRacer: Those are some really sweet wooden album racks you have there, I need to make me some of those. Been meaning to for awhile, actually .... Lol
Thanks! I borrowed a one piece design bin and made it two piece. It makes it a lot easier to move when empty. Holds around 300 IIRC. Four heavy duty casters, two swivel, make it easy to roll around loaded. Currently under contract with wife, that bin and the small (Discwasher brand?) stand are all the LP's I can store in living room.
Rough plans.
I routed 1/8" deep slots for the floor/front/back panels to interlock. I glued and screwed it together using a Kreg pocket hole jig. You have the option to plug the holes if desired. I secured from bottom/backside so no screws visible from front/side view. All edges rounded over with router.

Still digging them??
Yes, for sure. Wish I could keep the grilles off all the time, because they look and sound better, but have to keep them on most of the time with the kids.
Have not yet messed around with placement, but will do that when work slows down a bit.
I'm loving the bass, and will look into possibly spiking them when I get a chance.2 ChannelTurntable - VPI Classic 2/Ortofon 2M BlueAmplification - Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum II, Parks Audio Budgie PhonoSpeakers - GoldenEar Triton 17.2 Home TheaterDenon AVR-X3300W; Rotel RMB-1066; Klipsch RP-280F's, Klipsch RP-450C, Polk FXi3's, Polk RC60i; Dual SVS PB 2000's; BenQ HT2050; Elite Screens 120"Man CaveTurntable - Pro-Ject 2.9 Wood/Grado GoldAmplification - Dared SL2000a, McCormack DNA 0.5 DeluxeCD: Cambridge AudioSpeakers - Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary; LSiM 703; SDA 2A -
Nice! I am glad they are working out for you. Anymore wall damage? Lol. They really do a good job filling up the space you have. If I didn't have to drive back I would have stayed longer and kept listening. I think they were a better match for your room.
The 705 are actually the first speaker to sound right in my messed up room so I am beyond happy with them. From what a few people including polk support, because of the way it ports is why the match my room better then other speakers I've had.Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's. -

It's really good to hear they sound good in your room. I miss them. Best looking speaker I've ever owned for sure. I wish you had 12ax7, I would send you mine to try out.
From Brent Jessee site.
TELEFUNKEN, SIEMENS, VALVO, LORENZ, and other German made NOS: These tubes are usually characterized by an impressive open "air" at the top end. The soundstage is large, even in mono applications these tubes have a great 3-D image. The midrange is ruler flat, and the bass is tight and accurate. These tubes have a fine sense of dynamics, and most are impressively quiet.
For the lsim I actually took the tele's out and put in 3mica rca 5751 for the little extra bass kick.Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's.
