So VW gave you credit.....that you have to spend with them no less, so what are they really handing out if that money circles back to their own pockets ?

The $500 pre-paid Visa card can be spent anywhere that accepts Visa. It's not credit.

Might come in handy for the shopping season....still, not enough in my book.

At least it's something rather than nothing, and the $500 dealership card can be used for regular maintenance, those babies take pure synthetic oil, it's not exactly a $29.99 oil change on those things.

Says the card expires in a year but I think that CA law prohibits expiration of such things. I don't drive enough to use that in a year for maintenance. I guess I will have to use the rest on VW apparel so people will throw stuff at me when I walk down the street.

Speaking of Hitler.some say he invented the VW

But he drove in a Mercedes

he didn't drive anything... he was chauffeured. VW stands for the "people's car", and my grandfather got so peeved at my dad when he bought a piece of "Heir Hitler's revenge" that they did not speak for 6 months and after that, he refused to let that car be seen within a block of his house.

That's intense. I bet your grandfather was/is an interesting person to talk to and get stories from.

He was a tail gunner on B-17's over Germany. The only worse seat on that bird was in the ball turret. I tried many times to get him to talk, but he was not one to speak of such things. He passed more than a decade ago now.

Kinda glad we cheaped out and got the turbocharged gasoline Passat (tsi) last year instead of the diesel.

People think they save money with diesel. But In all honestly they spend far more on maintenance. And God forbid they keep it past warranty. Might as well take out a loan for repairs. The best diesel vw made was mk4 with the the ALH engine. We have several customers with over 500,000 Kms on them, and are waiting for them to die.

But what kind of maintenance bo they require? Maybe I should unass this thing first chance I get?

The oil and filter changes are triple the cost of gas engine.
Bruce first off the needs for diesels are for towing, extreme distance driving, or frequent driving in hilly areas where the extra torque is useful. I just traded in my 2015 Gas for a 2015 diesel same 3/4 ton truck. I pull trailers and put 40k plus a year.

I averaged 38MPH @11.4MPG over 41K miles in my gas 3/4ton. So far in my diesel, primarily city type driving in the area because I haven't made any road trips yet, 37mph @18.6MPG.

Pulling my 14' enclosed trailer i had no passing gear at 70mph with my gas truck and dipped quite a bit on instant fuel economy going over large over passes and hills. Averaged 5.5mpg on a 300mi rod trip.

This diesel doesn't slow and requires very little pedal to push over hills it just cruises.
Plus I went from 2.9% financing to 1.4%...also paid 8k less than i would have a year ago since I bought a 2015 close out.

I probably would have also started to have premature transmission issue in the gas truck.

But for you Bruce unless you fit the criteria stated above you probably should have stayed with gas....but there is also no need to get in a panic and get turned upside down with the TDi and just wait out to see what VW is going to propose.

I was supposed to be driving it back and forth to AZ until I decided not to retire yet. I have to stop making plans.

No harm no foul, if things go awry with inspections in Cali, and you have family in AZ, and if their vehicle inspections are more lenient, just register the vehicle there

Many states like Texas still don't have smog inspection on diesel motors
