TV Mount above Fireplace

Any issues with heat hurting a flat panel when this is done....actually considering flush mounting recessed within the wall, and an angled mount to tilt the panel. Polk Soundbar under the panel and I have to figured out something for the DTV box..the nice is the wall above and behind the fireplace is void...

It all depends on the Mantel. I don't like mounting TV's over fireplaces as they are always way to high. Not to mention the higher difficulty running the wires to it.

I'm with Dan...most of the time, they are considerably too high if you subscribe to the ideal watching position being eye level at the bottom 1/3rd of the screen.

That being said, most modern fireplace mantles provide enough heat deflection to keep heat from being a major concern.

I would be more concerned about putting a tv in a wall recess than about heat from the fireplace. Heat tends to be vented out the top rear, and even on an LED model there is some heat coming off. Surface mount should be fine and is commonly done. I prefer having TV sets on stands, but know some families don't want to do that.

Regarding the fireplace, it may depend on the type. May be worth setting up a thermometer to measure the heat level on the mantel when the fireplace is going.

If it's a wood burner.....don't even think about it. Gas ones are better, but as others said, the height and strain on the neck looking up all the time will wear thin after awhile.

    Agreed.

Is the recess already there or are you cutting it in?

If you're cutting it in, a lot of times that void you plan on cutting into is an air gap that is required by fire code.

As others have asked, is it gas or wood burning?

Every time I read about putting a TV over the fireplace I think of the scene in What About Bob, where, setting up the interview, the TV crew shouts "It's a fireplace shot." :)

We had it in our other house and it was never an issue mbipqnujdo40.jpg
  • I guess it would depend on how high the mantle is. I thought about doing mine over the fireplace but the 6' high mantle makes the tv to high to view comfortably.

The fireplace is a non vented gas burner, so there is a large void behind the wall...the space for the fireplace is framed all the way to the ceiling. Honestly its not my first choice but our living room is smallish for 5 people and a big dog, so it would be a decent space savings....let me take a pic....

The other bonus would be me finagling a new tv out of the deal....

How big of a tv do you plan on, and how far back will be the seating?

Mitigating the viewing angle will be a trade off of tv size and distance back (which will reduce the upward viewing angle) and can result in pain free viewing.
