Another PSW110 Victim

So I have had a PSW110 for a little over three years. Bought 7/1/2012, shipped a few days later, and arrived a few days after that. It was part of a set that I bought through an Egg company. The system only had about 300 hours of use on it when it goes into climate controlled storage for about a year. Really, it was a closet of my previous rental.
I get a new house, set this whole thing up, go to watch a movie, and... Squelch! Thats all I get out of the sub. All the other speakers work fine. So I try a few things. I adjust the level on the sub; no change. I adjust the low pass filter on both the receiver and sub (individually, of course); no change. I bought and tried a different audio cable from the receiver, no change. I even remove all inputs from the sub and turn the thing on; no change! No matter what I do, I am getting nothing but amplified hum.
I get in touch with Polk Audio tech support on 9/21/2015. My options are, in order of least to most ridiculous: 1. Pay $150 to buy a new amp; 2. Buy a new sub; 3. Pay to send current sub to California, from Maryland pay to have the problem diagnosed again, pay for the board, then pay return shipping. Wow! Two way shipping, diagnostic fee, part, and repair. Ouch!
I have seen a lot of posts about the PSW110 failing between 37 and 40 months. Are all these a coincidence or is it by design?
Anyone have some suggestions for a really good sub under the $175 range?

Hello,
Welcome to Polk's forum, I'm sorry there's a problem. Usually only the bass amplifier has to be sent to Polk's service not the complete subwoofer. This involves removing the screws going around the amp's input plate and pulling the amp away from the enclosure.
Do you feel comfortable doing that?

Hi Ken
I have the plate off. I have poked around in there a little bit already. Even sending just the plate will be more than its worth by the end.
I did ask for a schematic. I was an electronics tech in the service for a number of years and have a heavy electronics background. If I could see how the circuit is designed, and had access to the replacement components, I could fix it on my own.
I am still waiting to hear back from the rep on that.
Thanks, Vince
