Telarc CD's.........

I own 2 of these both are by Steve Reid, and they are two of my favorite go to disc's when I just want to chill and relax..

The Quality of these are just as good if not better then most of my SACD's

My question I have is do any of you own any of these, and should I be looking at others that might just kick me in the A$$???

Thanks....

  • When I first started getting into classical i researched what labels to trust and Telarc seemed to get above average ratings for their recordings.

The first one I purchased was Stravinsky's Firebird. The dynamics blew me away and almost did the same to my speakers.

I used to seek out Telarc discs for their quality.

Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture with real canons. I have the redbook version but I believe there is also a SACD version. The CD has a warning label regarding the dynamic range possibly causing damage to speakers.

I'll pickup a Telarc even if I don't know the title usually if I find one, stellar recordings and production IMO, as has been said, as good as some of my SACD's. I have about 10 Telarc discs and they never seem to dissappoint, Carmina Burana being on of my favs!

Plain and simple...the founders were a couple of musicians and smart guys that were not happy and content with existing recordings and techniques. They figured some things out and were ahead of their time....it took others a long time to catch up....some never did.

I remember really getting into jazz and classical back in high school ('80-'84) and my band director use to just praise their recordings. He had a nice 2 ch system and we would sometime go to his apt, which was not too far from the school, and just listen. Recording after recording, from jazz to classical, and back again.....

Today, I saw this one in the ~1,000 CDs my daughter picked up for me at a garage sale near her home.

I pulled it out to play because of this thread.

So far, I can highly recommend it to anybody into jazz trios -- Geri Allen, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette.

This is good music very well recorded.

    @txcoastal1,

So far I've listened to 147 of the CD purchase.

I sorted out about 300 that I thought I would like. So, I'm about half way through those.

Of the 147 I would say that about two thirds are CDs that my wife and I shall return to often. About 15 are ones that we may never listen to again. The reminder are ones that I shall likely listen to on occasion, but not often.

As we listen to them, we're rating them on a 1-5 scale, with 5s being ones that will be on our all-time favorites list. My wife heard one -- "West of 5th" by Hank Jones, Christian McBride, and Jimmy Cobb -- that she wanted to rate a "6."

We are definitely pleased with our purchase, which when the two sets of Boltz shelves are considered, has already proven to be a bargain.

For me it has been a great experience because I'm listening to a lot of good and great music and musicians that I would likely never turned to on my own.

I have installed a Synology DS713+ which is up and running with about 50 albums stored on it. I am now using Synology's software -- Audio Station, File Station, Disc Station Manager -- to manage the database and serve the music to either of my three PS Audio DACs.

However, I am not yet moving all my music to the server till I decide 1) exactly how I'm going to download it from iTunes on my iMac to the server and 2) how I'm going to make it accessible to the server SW. Audio Station and File Station are not the most robust or easy to use packages. But, so far, I have not adequately explored alternatives like Miniserver, Audirvana.

    All in due course.
