Ok so the GF's DVD player that is ages old bit the dust. When I'm visiting at her house we end up watching a lot of Netflix or DVD's from Nextflix and her Amazon Fire and even some Hulu. I'm going to eventually build her a little surround system probably using my Denon 1612 AVR and some of my Polk's. I have an extra center and my Monitor 12's aren't in use at my house atm. So my question is this. She likes to listed to CD's and radio some too. The REciever has the radio taken care of but, Is there a good player out that that can be had for fairly cheap that does all the DVD stuff and is a good audio player? I'm Not sure who is doing what these days on that front.

Does it need to be able to play Netflix and such or just physical media?
Some of the guys here like the Pioneer Elite players. Perhaps a used Oppo or Marantz UD series?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

No actually the Netflix and Hulu we play through her Fire. It just needs to play DVD's and CD's.

So what is the current high end audio thing? Bluray audio? I guess SACD is kind of old now? Honestly I use a PS3 for my movies at home and it seems to work well. Stumbled across this:

The panasonic Players are ok for todays standard. For the level of system you building there I see no real reason to spend anymore then $299 on a player.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -

True but this will lead to me getting something for my system.... You know how this works. You look for a budget player for x find a better player then you have for you and then x get's put on the back burner yet again......

There are a lot more albums on SACD than Bluray Audio. Only time will tell if Bluray Audio really takes off.
For more money Marantz UD series plays pretty much everything. DVD movies, DVD Audio, CD, SACD, Bluray movies, Bluray Audio, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, streams DLNA, plays digital media from a USB stick. Everything.

Same goes for Oppo, this one is cheaper than the Marantz, but used and older.

What brand and size TV does the girlfriend have? Unless it is above 40 inches, may be no need to go Blu Ray. I would recommend sticking with a new model Blu Ray or DVD player from the same manufacturer as the TV if the TV is from a major manufacturer. Makes operation simpler that way. Bear in mind that the less expensive Blu Ray and DVD players may no longer come with analog outputs but just a digital and/or HDMI. Most new disc players these days around $100 or less are basically disposable in build quality, but functional and do the job for what most people are interested in. It is possible to get decent playback quality for around $50 these days but don't expect build quality.

Pioneer ELITE BDP-05FD has HDMI.
SACD is still king.
I have that Pioneer in my HT rig, love it for Blu-ray and DVD. Load time is a bit slow, but I don't have ADD like a lot of folks these days. CD sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, but I don't use it for that.

Thanks everyone. I feel more educated on this subject now. When I was thining about this I had no clue. I've always read and heard that Pioneer Elite were good units. Marantz is another name that keeps coming up. That seems like a really good deal. Ok so does the multi channel audio come from the HDMI?

I recently got a Marantz UD5005 that's being used as my primary 2 channel source, and as a Bluray player. I'm not a movie buff by any means, but I've been very happy with it. For 2 channel playback it sounds fantastic. It's obviously not on par with an upper end dedicated CDP, but I didn't expect it to be. For video playback I have no complaints. It plays the videos. I don't have any experience using the Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, so I can't comment on that. In my past experience though, it was better to let a good AVR take care of the decoding anyway. That may or may not be of any real concern to you though. The nirvana inducer-

Ok so does the multi channel audio come from the HDMI?
The HDMI just transfers the signal, the player or receiver decodes the muti channel information. Surprised you haven't dipped your toes into blu-ray yet. The newer audio formats are worth it alone.

Both. The P3 was a good player in it's day, but players have moved on up from them in both pic and sound.
Are you decoding the newer formats in your receiver ? I don't think you can get them if the P3 is just hooked up with a digital cable.HT SYSTEM-

I have an Emotive MMC-1 atm. I was using my Denon until I got this for $250 last year. I've been happy with it but if the prices of the Yamaha and Marantz Receivers with pre-outs stay where they are I'll get one of them when I can. That Marantz UD5007 looks like a good unit for me. Not really....the Emo doesn't decode the newer formats. You do have options though, get a blu-ray player with 7 channels of analog outputs, which the Marantz doesn't have, but the OPPO does. You can find used OPPO 103's for around 400 and that would save you from having to buy a newer receiver/pre/pro.HT SYSTEM-

Except I want a newer one. The Emo doesn't upscale the S-video and the Yamaha 2030 I'm looking at does. I probably jumped the gun when I bought this pre but at the time it's what I thought I wanted. I have learned a lot about this mainly through here. I happen to have a few LD's that I love to play every so often. Mainly the Star Wars ones and the couple of music video ones from the 80's. Oh yea and thanks for all the info. I appreciate the help and knowledge this forum provides.HT/2Channel: Emotiva MMC-1, Adcom GFA-555II, Polk SDA 3.1's, Teac TN-300 TT, Polk Center and Sub.
