FS: CAT 600.2 Dual Mono Amp

Offering my CAT 600.2 stereo amplifier for sale. If you never heard of California Audio Technology (CAT), they are an extremely high end amplifier manufacturer which make arguably the best amps in the world. This is a true dual mono amplifier with two separate power switches, two power cords, etc. The pictures probably don't do it justice but this is an incredibly built amp that is also extremely huge and heavy. This is a perfectly linear amp that has 600 watts per channel (wpc) into 8 ohms; double to 1200 wpc into 4 ohms and doubles again to 2400 wpc into 2 ohms. Needless to say it will power ANY speaker with ease. This amp weighs almost 150 lbs so plan accordingly and bring help to load. Auditions for interested buyers are welcome. qrmq9ccikvu5.jpg

I'm offering an esoteric world class amp at a bargain price. This mates extremely well with the Thiel CS5i's I am also selling under a different ad.

New this amp cost $22,500 so my asking price of $5200 although quite expensive, is quite a bargain. I might consider an audio related trade plus cash. Feel free to email me with any questions. I've attached a pdf with additional information below. Thanks for looking.

    I'll also offer a package deal for anyone who buys my Thiel CS5i speakers and this amp. I'll knock off another $1000. So that is $5200+3750=8950-1000= $7950. That's $32,000 worth of gear for over 75% off. If you ever wanted a true reference system that will last as long as you do, this is the time to do it. Early Christmas present to yourself. :-)

    I've seen some of their speakers, built in subs at every channel, probably the ultimate for HT. Cat does something, they pull out the stops.

    Guys this gear is priced down to earth for gear only the more affluent could afford. It's a steal at these prices.

    @Texas42,
    A couple of questions:
    • Are you willing to help arrange shipping -- e.g., to New Hampshire?
    • Do you have the original packaging for shipping? Obviously, the amp would need serious double cartons and palletizing.
    Thanks.

    Amp is now sold. Thanks, Phil! Since I no longer have the CAT to power my Thiel CS5i's (also for sale in a separate ad) I will drop the price on the Thiels by $500 to $3295 to expedite sale.

    LOL!

    Yes, I learned how to lift with my legs (as well as to swing a sledge hammer with my legs) working in the stone mills and quarries in southern Indiana 50 or so years ago.

    In this case, however, I'm going to let the front-end loader on my tractor help me get it off the truck and down my drive way to the garage.

    As a "condition of approval" my wife made me agree that we would hire a local "two-men-and-a-truck" moving company to get the amp into the house and into position on my rack.

    Unfortunately, I think I have at least two and maybe three weeks to wait for delivery. :(

    Yeah, they just picked it up at my house so it is on its way! At first the guy walked in and 'you have an amp I need to pick up?'. I told him he would probably need some help and he could use my furniture dolly. He said he didn't think he would need any help for 'just an amp'. So I showed it to him. He slowly shook his head and went back out and came back with his buddy and asked if they could use the dolly to get to his truck. Wise move....lol

    Anyway, he said probably about 2 weeks. My audiophile best friend came over this morning and we listened to it one more time with the Thiels. He was blown away by the Thiels/CAT combo and thought they were incredible. He has me thinking about keeping the Thiels but then I'd need find another monster amp so have to ponder that one a bit more. I know you will love the amp. Looking forward to your review once you get it.

    @Texas42,

    Im really happy to hear that the amp was picked up. The agent at Craters & Freighters made me think it would be no earlier than mid-week next week.

    Your story reminds me of the time I moved from Columbus, IN, to Palo Alto, CA.

    The movers had a crew of three, one of whom was among the stoutest guys I've ever seen. I think he played tackle on the Indiana or Purdue University football team and was working as a mover in the summer.

    All morning he insisted on carrying stuff by himself, even when I suggested he needed help.

    His standard response to my suggestion: "Oh, that's just gravy."

    Finally, he came to a large, and I mean large, hide-a-bed, which I honestly think he though he was somehow going to manage himself. This thing had a queen-size bed in it and was 96" long and 48" deep with loose pillows.

    I walked into the family room where he was eyeing it pensively, and said, "Well, is that gravy?"

    He said, "That's beefy gravy!"

    He got help.

    Can't wait either to hear your impressions Moose. I do have a question though, being the curious schmuck I am......how big is your rack ? This bad boy is a monster and you might want to figure out a nice amp stand and spot on the floor.....along with cables long enough for that position.

    @tonyb,

    My rack and the configuration of my main system (Family Room) is, unfortunately, dictated by the geometry of the room and the construction of my house.

    I don't have the luxury of a dedicated listening room. So, I have to make the most of my family room, which is a large (42'x16') space (with some irregularities). The long wall on which my speakers must be located in the room also has a large "array" of built-in cabinets and bookshelves, as well as a large passage into the kitchen.

    These cabinets are deep enough for electronic gear,but will only hold my Cambridge Audio iPod dock, PS Audio DirectStream DAC and PerfectWave Memory Player, Perreaux SM6P MKII preamp, our flat screen TV and BlueRay player, old VHS player (still have lots of VHS tapes that we want to use on occasion, and the cable box.

    I have installed a rack in the basement immediately below the built-in cabinets to hold my Perreaus 750P monoblocks, Silver Circle Pure Power One 5.0 power conditioner, and Dreadnought. All cables pass through the shelves, cabinet base and floor.

    The rack in the basement is a set of 48"-wide industrial-grade shelves with 3/4" MDF on each shelf, and the components are all on spikes. Each shelf has a few hundred pounds of capacity. So, there are no problems with the weight. The Perreaux monoblocks together weigh about the same as the CAT amp.

    The unfortunate consequence is that this beautiful amp will be out of sight -- mine and others! :(

    The peculiarities on my family room, by the way, are the reason that I could not really consider buying the Thiel speakers Texas42 was offering with this amp. I did some research on them, and they must be set a minimum of 1' from the back wall, and 2.5' is preferred. Because of the built-ins in my family room, speakers must also be set about 12' a part. The room is only 16' wide; therefore, the sweet spot with properly located Thiels would be a few feet outside the opposite wall -- i.e., in my side yard!

    But, the most important problem is that my wife would not want speakers to be sitting out in the middle of this room, which has to be useful for various purposes in addition to my listening to music.

    These are the reasons,by the way, that the SDA SRS1.2TLs are as good as it gets for us, under the circumstances. They are not too deep, so that we can place them sufficiently far from the back wall to get good sound rendition and still have them close enough together to get the sweet spot right in the middle of a sofa on the opposite wall of the room. This is where I sit! :)

    @tonyb,

    I dug out some old pictures of the built-in cabinets and my rack in the basement to give you a better sense of our situation.

    A set of three windows that angle into the room begins about two feet to the right of the right channel speaker. These add to the challenges our room presents.

    The cabinets:

    23mslq8kfl7y.jpg

    Cabinet doors open showing the location of source electronics and preamp:

    k9f6fx79ahze.jpg

    The rack in the basement with Dreadnought on the top shelf, mono blocks on the second shelf, and Silver Circle Pure Power One 5.0 power conditioner (and excess equipment) on the third shelf. (The bottom shelf -- not shown -- has empty audio equipment boxes.):

    qnnhcauieump.jpg

    The CAT 600.2 amp will replace the two mono blocks on the second shelf, and I am also likely to move the power conditioner to the same shelf.

    All in all, this makes the most of our situation.
