Who's in the 4k bandwagon and WHY? Should I just invest on WHISKY instead

Just returned my LED TV and in the market for a new TV. Some articles say investing in a 4kTV is not worth it so I would like to check in the Polk's world for insights.

One of my audio geek friend told me that he'll rather spend 15 bottles of fine premium YAMAZAKI whisky than purchase a 4k TV. LOL

Please advise polks

No, you shouldn't unless you either sit REALLY close to the screen or have a GIGANTIC screen.

When I purchased my 60" Sony this May I was looking @ 4k as this what they push. When I was told the best picture was about a 4 ft distance, I said what? Add on top of that the quantity of 4k content, I thought what a scam.

There is more to a 4K than just pixels. Image processing is one thing that is handled better in some 4K LCD sets as well as motion handling because of better video processing power. Not all are equal of course so it is a good idea to go to a store and compare what is available. I did that and could tell a clear difference in overall picture quality, including color rendition with a 4k set compared to any 1080p set in the store or my own at home which was still working fine.

Despite what the chart above shows, I can tell a difference between a streamed native 4k movie and the same movie up sampled from a 1080p source from 12 feet away. I can't say it is a big difference, but is is visible. After a few shots I probably wouldn't be care about the difference though.

Do they even sell a TV that's not 4k anymore?? Why not just find the TV you like, and not care wether it's 4k or not?? They all have a pretty damn good picture anymore anyway..

    Just sayin..

I purchased a 55" Sammy 4K. I have seen content from directv and netflix. The 4K effect is spectacular and the 1080i/1080p/720p is better than other 1080p. Go look at the store demos and buy what you like... The prices are CHEAP right now.

I have a Samsung 55 Ultra.. The picture is stunning to me.. 3D Is something I wasn't expecting to be a big deal but it's incredibly cool to see.. Makes watching movies a blast.. But if it's not your thing then that's fine.. I also prefer the sound of lp's to cd's.. I think high end cd players sound better then basic cd/bluray players (excluding oppo's).. I think Dolby Atmos will tank and is nothing but a sales gimmick.. 4K is the real deal though.. You can buy whiskey but your whole family can't or wouldn't enjoy it as much.. Ha!

I have a 50" 4K computer monitor and the difference in clarity/realism is astounding over HD. I will be upgrading to a large screen 4K TV or projector when a good price point for value/quality shows up for a 100" screen or larger.

I own the Samsung 55" 4K Ultra HD and we all love it. Distance from the screen is a factor (I read) and ours is sitting 8 ft from the leather love boat, so the picture is just amazing......better than anything we've had in its place and we've had just about all different kinds of flat panel sets sitting in that same exact place, so my vote is find one you like and can afford (of course) without breaking the whisky allowance and enjoy the darn thing. Last time I checked...only getting to live once, make it fun and spoil yourself a little!!

. Last time I checked...only getting to live once, make it fun and spoil yourself a little!!

Well, that depends on if your voting, in which case you can live indefinitely. :)

Lets remove the 4k content issue and simply compare 4k TV's to 1080p TV's on regular cable 1080p content, thats what most would be viewing anyway most the time.

The 4k set will upscale to a higher form of HD, but not exactly 4k, an it does look better. IMHO....it combines the color richness of a Plasma with the clarity and brightness of an LCD. Best of both worlds.

    THIS!

I can flat out tell a HUGE difference in my fathers new 4K Samsung and my 1080P Samsung plasma, at 10'.

Obviously there is going to be a huge performance gap from brand to brand and model to model.

Having said that, I will most likely be waiting for my plasma to die before I upgrade. But I do think a good 4K set has a lot to offer...

But as Tony has mentioned, motion blur is still a serious issue.

Amen Skipper, if all you watch is news channels and cooking shows, won't matter much but sports fans will be disappointed with Oleds performance. If you notice too, they never have fast motion material playing on display models for Oled or 4K sets.

Yes, plasma is something special. Watching the 2012 Olymipics on my 50" Samsung plasma using a DIY coat hanger antenna was one of the 'best" tv watching experience in my own home at that point. I bet the picture would have been beyond spectacular if I had Pani plasma mated with a 30 ft high DB8 antenna.

DLP is not bad at all also....but there are the other Pro's and Cons to consider.

Yep, they don't want to showcase their faults. With 4k, the cheaper the set usually equates to the worse motion blur. Samsung and Sony in my opinion have tackled the issue the best so far. Will have to see how Oled does down the road but price wise they are still way out of the ball park and in case you didn;t know.....the Oled screen's life span isn't as good as the competitions.
