Pure audio blu-ray

I would be interested to hear opinions on audio blu-ray. I own 10 of them. I'm trying to determine if they are superior to CD. The members here have some excellent systems,(better than mine), so you would be the right crowd to ask.

I have two so far - John Lennon Imagine, and Supertramp Crime Of the Century.

I find them superior to CD, but nowhere near the quality of DVD Audio, and not quite up to SACD quality.

Not looking like a good start so far, IMHO. However, it's hard to be too judgmental based on two discs...

Color me hopeful, but prepared to be disappointed.

I'm also thinking this is a bit to late for the market. It's not going to fly. Downloading High Re files I think it the future of High rez music period. Spinning discs is going down fast and hard.
Not to mention storing disc vs storing files.

I was just thinking of this earlier today. I was buying and ripping them for a while, but have not seen any new ones lately.

I have around 22 of them. Most will say the source content is from a minimum 24 bit/96kHz source. I paid around $16 a piece for mine, not the $29-$35 full retail price, so I consider them to be a fair purchase for what they are. There are some differences with digital downloads, beyond actually having liner notes and lyrics in a booklet and a physical product. There are high resolution 5.1 surround formats available as well as uncompressed PCM in stereo. Rush's "Signals" is due out in a few days. I suspect the decision to release surround versions in this format is part of what is causing the lack of titles. They also no doubt aren't selling well at the full retail price.

As far as sound quality goes, the ones I have are superior to CD quality. I don't listen to the surround sound tracks though, just 2 channel PCM through an Oppo 105 Blu Ray player.

I have Diana Krall's "The Look of Love" in multiple formats (CD, 24/96 download, Blu Ray Audio, SACD). I can't tell the difference between the high resolution versions through the Oppo, but they are all better than CD. Not by a huge margin, but it is noticeable to me and I will continue to buy any new releases in the format that really interest me. Not at full price though.

I have exactly two and like them.
    The Who Quadrophenia &
    Rush Fly By Night

I have exactly two Hi Res downloads and like them.
Led Zeppelin II is great &
Supertramp Crime of the Century is great as well.

Get a good DAC and the source will follow.
You don't have to spend a lot of money either.
  • They sell them on soundstagedirect.com also on musicdirect.com
also amazon has them. I just ordered Beck "Seachange" Some of mine sound real good( Amy Winehouse "Back to Black") and one sounds real crappy(Neil Young"Psychedelic Pill). The brief acoustic guitar intro to the NY disc sounds excellent but the electric guitars sound unlistenable. Young loves the harsh, distorted "buzz-tone" electric guitar sound. I can't stand it. For anyone into vinyl find Beck "Morning Phase". It has excellent sound quality and the music keeps growing on you the more times you listen.
  • I also like SACD and vinyl. My understanding was that (in theory) Blu-ray should be superior to both, because a BR disc can store something like 10 times the data that SACD does. But in reality, I don't hear any difference in sound quality. In fact, some redbook CD's sound just as good as any hi-res format,IMO. I think its the quality of the recording that's the determining factor, not the format.
  • I have bought Blu-ray audio discs mainly for the surround option. That goes for SACD and DVD-A as well. I doubt my rig along with my ears can tell the difference in hi res music. Waiting for the HFPA of Queens A Night At The Opera to arrive in the mail. I also just picked up the Talking Heads Brick Box Set. Really fun to listen to.

A few comparisons that show a night and day difference for me:

Fleetwood Mac Rumors, "The Chain". Compare the DVD Audio version, in high res 2 channel, to any CD or vinyl. There is space and seperation on the high res that I have never heard on any other format, even to the point that you can hear people moving around in the studio right before the music starts...

Donald Fagen Nightfly "I.G.Y." DVD Audio high res 2 channel - Vinyl comes close, but the dynamics and imaging on the DVD Audio are without equal.

Dire Straits Brothers In Arms "Your Latest Trick", SACD 2 channel high res. This is my go-to track for staging. The placement of the musicians on the stage, AND their movement to and away from the mic at various times is captivating. Other formats can't compare...
