Gettin' excited...SRS 2 pin/blade purchase

Happy news: After years and years of searching, I've finally got an agreement in place to purchase a pair of 4th-generation SDAs that will accept a Dreadnought and monoblock amps. Price is higher than I'd prefer, but "fair" in that neither one of us got taken to the cleaners--and--he has to hold onto them until I can get there to pick them up (about 2,200 miles one-way) At this point, I've put $150 "down" on them, with the balance to be paid at pick-up.

I've had the monoblocs since 2007, and been unable to use them on my main (SDA 1B) speakers. That's been tough. One of them has earned it's keep by powering a center-channel speaker. I have the Dreadnought transformer, and a housing for it, but haven't made assembling the parts a priority.

I pick up my pin/blade SRS 2s the next time I'm in California--about two weeks from now, give-or-take a bit. Dear Old Dad is in a rehab hospital, I'll be visiting him then, and making a side-trip to grab the Polks. I anticipate that Dad will be coming home with me at whatever point he's released from the hospital.

So: Capacitors and resistors and Neutrik connectors and RD0-194s in my future. I'll likely experiment with 198s and see what happens. Maybe...just maybe...Gimpod's circuit boards.

I'm hoping for a relatively painless transaction. No telling when I'll get them home--probably with the rest of Dad's stuff, in a U-haul, but getting them to Dad's house is good enough for the immediate future.

Dad had his 101st birthday in the hospital. They tell me his pneumonia is better, and a different painkiller is helping him get through physical therapy. They have yet to tell me why he has such pain a month after falling--they claim "no broken bones". I'm skeptical.

Glad to hear the pneumonia is under control & It would tear me up to know at his age he is in pain. God Bless him & i hope they find what it is

Picked up the speakers tonight. No telling when I'll get them to MY home, but for now I'll listen to them at Dad's place. My disappointment is that I forgot to get a photo of the speakers with the former owner. We had 'em loaded into the SUV before I remembered to snap a pic. I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to get them unloaded into Dad's house.

We'll be driving the Coastal Highway (California Hwy. 1) north tomorrow, looking forward to seeing Big Blue Ocean, birdwatching, and dipping our feet in the saltwater.

Dear Old Dad walked for the first time in ~7 weeks last Tuesday. I came to California to jack him up--getting him to eat more and work harder. Turns out the folks I needed to jack-up were his Physical Therapy people. Still too soon to know if he can go "home" (with skilled caregivers) or whether he has to go to a nursing home. Overall, he's not in good shape physically or mentally.

Wow, beating pneumonia and walking after being bed ridden for seven weeks at 101 is amazing. Your dad has some kind of intestinal fortitude. My hat is off to him.

Anna and I drove the Pacific Coast Highway on the way back to Dad's home from "almost LA".

Both of us lived "inland" all our lives, so Pacific Ocean and miles of beach, rocks, elephant seals, dolphin (only one seen) and whales is just mind-blowing. I was out in the surf while Anna was birdwatching. I got turned upside-down by a larger-than-average wave, and sprung my right arm which is healing but still weak and sore.

As a result, the speakers are still loaded in the back of our SUV. I suspect that I'll finally get them into the house tomorrow or Sunday. I am hoping there's no cabinet damage or magnet shift from this turn of events.

Sounds like Dear Old Dad will be released on the 16th or 17th of September, although if he continues to improve they can keep him longer--which is fine with me.

We're starting to look for handicap-accessible housing for him "back home" so that we have some place for him as soon as we get off the plane; unlike here the housing market is tight where I live. It's still pretty-much a seller's market.

I appreciate the support you folks have shown for Dad. Means a lot to me.

Never did put the speakers into Dad's house. I have had no help and a bum arm. Loading into a U-Haul trailer tomorrow (I don't know how, but it's GOING to happen. At least my arm is improved) along with Dad's most-used furniture, dishes, paperwork, etc.

Anna will drive back home Thursday, Dad and I will fly home as soon as he's released--one or two weeks from now.

Signing the lease for Dad's apartment today or tomorrow.

I'd sure be happier to have heard these speakers here in California using my own equipment, but that just couldn't happen given the circumstances. I anticipate pulling the drivers out and packing them separately to reduce the chance of Dreaded Magnet-Shift.

Well...it's now the middle of December and I've done NOTHING with these speakers except move them from storage-space to storage-space.

Dear Old Dad broke his leg a month ago; normal care for him once I got him into a handicap-accessible apartment in my home town was a 60-to-80 hour per week job for me before the break. I finally had to hire additional help. He is now doing Home Hospice. A week or two ago, I thought he was a "goner"; but he seems to have perked-up substantially as of yesterday. He went a couple of weeks without eating or drinking very much; and he wouldn't open his eyes. He's lost a lot of muscle mass--he didn't have any fat before. As of yesterday, he's drinking a fair amount of protein supplement, and even ate a small portion of chicken.

My intention is that I will do a proper inspection of the speakers, put the drivers back in the cabinets, and listen to them "stock" over the weekend. This will happen while Dad is asleep, because while he's awake I try to be in the same room so I can interact with him. We're watching a lot of Hogan's Heroes episodes.

I have a bag full of capacitors and resistors, silver solder, and some Neutrik Speakon connectors for the SDA/Dreadnought connections. That process begins--probably--next Monday.

I forgot to order damping material for the driver baskets, and PowerGrab for the magnets. Ooops.

Kinda interested in applying some Black Hole to the rear of the cabinets, but I'll have to find a source first.

Glad your Dad is doing better. I've found Sonic Barrier to be nearly as effective as BH5.
My only complaint is the PSA backing is less sticky than the BH5.

  • I used Sonic Barrier 3 2" wide strips behind each MW with a 1" gap between strips The adhesive seemed good although I did make sure the cabinet was squeaky clean. You might try 2 instead of three strips like I did, I noticed less bass boom and cleaner more detailed mids.
