6 Hour Vintage Speaker Restro

I just got somewhat done restro'n these Advent1's. I got about 6 hours of work into them. I replaced the rotted out surrounds & redid some wiring & did the cabinets. They still need some cleaning up. I got it hooked right now to Sansui Model 8 @60wpc. I wanted to replace the vintage speaker connects-which is very simple. I didnt because i really like them original & i can do so at any time. Near mint -1 scratch which i cant find now. Howards restore hid it so well i cant find it. The grills are in very good condition & for being 1970's vintage i cant complain. I got about 30.00 in them. Im listening to Eagles Greatest Hits & im liking them. I am going to A-B them when i get the KLH-23's done in a few weeks on the tube amp. If i decide i may keep both n rotate them often. I got 30.00 if that in cost of these 5.00 speakers & i enjoy learning. This was my 4th surround job. I wish i knew the original owner to show them this project & let them know they will be enjoyed for year more :)

Thanks guys. I listened for 2 hours now & i am loving these. I listened to Eagles & Dream Theater & now some Pink Floyd & they sound super sweet at 9oclock on dial. Not too loud-very detailed. Vocals are top notch with R Waters. Bass is punchy. Another Brick sounds awesome with the guitar & musical stuff. Oh Yeah :)

Not sure if this has ever happened to some with vintage speakers. I threw in a Tom Petty & it sounded great. Then i threw in Staind & it sounded terrible. I didnt dare throw in a Ozzy Metallica or Megadeth rocking music... I removed the Staind & put in Jim Brickman (piano only) & pure bliss again. I get that with SDA's & Monitor 11's once in awhile. I prefer rock music on rta's & monitors over any polk speaker i have. Might just be my ears & preference ????

Have to agree there! Don't really see Advents as super rock speakers, but they're so mellow on everything else and nice on classical.

Great job on the cabs, Randy! And surrounds. Mine are original and the wood is in good shape so no need to mess with them, the woofers were redone by the surround guru on AK. Haven't addressed crossovers, but as can be seen above, Kloss was the master of the no frills, keep it simple crossover-that's what I like about my KLHs so much! EPIs have a similar strategy and sound nice as well. (Not that there's anything wrong with complex crossovers, Mr. A. Jones has shown us that even cheap speakers can benefit from such networks-but many vintage speakers relied more on their drivers-and they're just a different beast).

5:30 AM? WOW! If I were up that time of day I'd be hospitalized for cardiac arrest! Not a morning guy. I never was. Even in H.S., I was the guy throwing on his clothes, grabbing his books and barely getting on the bus, often running after it, waving it down! lol I've NEVER subscribed to; early to bed early to rise...", I curse that adage and have to wonder about an entire society that runs on such ideas when each one of us is different! It's almost criminal-my best stuff was written, read, and revealed at night! I love the NIGHT-quiet, serene, the noise of buying and selling muted, the madness of men/women paused, an open, infinite, welcoming canvas to paint, write, or merely contemplate! Does that make me a creature of the dark like one of our most infamous members? Perhaps, but then again I'm not a farm boy, PFB?

Those old Sansuis do sound pretty good. I have a 5000A that has real synergy with Boston A100s-coincidentally enough the speaker built to take on Kloss's Advents.

Thanks for notice. That is how they were. I just fixed the ends where they connect to speaker... I am waiting to redo other speakers & listen to them BEFORE deciding which ones im keeping. Im going to have that ones crossovers redone. I will sell off the one i dont keep to help with funds..... I posted that picture & figured someone with more knowledge than i would know if they are original & obviously a 40+ year old speaker needs to be updated

Cnh. You crack me up. I wanted to hit the like&lol button at the same time. I enjoyed the advents today & other models ive had in past. But curiosity after reading about the klh23's for the last 2-3 days has got me wondering & another thing is-hows it going to sound on the Yaqin ms30L with vintage speakers ? I plan on redo'n the cabinets on the klh's tomorrow & i have a few other things it needs before i can listen to it & the cloth surrounds need to be updated with gunk stuff. Then i can get em up n running; ) Xovers look alot easier than most & i dont dare mess with them. I will ship them to WMG

Nice. Did you put some goop on the fabric surround? #2 Son is still using 6's at school. He preferred them over CRS's. :# That boy ain't right.

Not yet... Need to do that & the crossover is not working on one. No power to tweeter. Opened it up & tried different things. So im going to swap them out with others & if i decide which ones stay id like the crossovers redone. Read alot of good things about vintage KLH's on tubes. How does those ones sound ?

I have had great luck getting ring stains off the top with an old white t shirt on top and a hot dry iron. Sometimes you can still see it because you know it's there ,but to others ,barely noticeable. Sometime you get fantastic results and sometimes not much better. But never does it get worse. Take your time and have iron on medium and go to hot if the results are not there yet. Nice job on both pair. Enjoy. D

Nice work on the KLHs! May have to hit you up for your technique. My ADS and Dynacos need veneer help!

I had a pair of KLH 6s for a week or so that ended up as a bust. They were the originals with NO access to the drivers. Had Pete look at them and he trashed one tweeter trying to get at them. Those old crossovers fail and, in the process, you have no tweeters. I didn't take the time to really listen to these when I got them. But at home the lack of highs was obvious. Unfortunately, they ended up in a junk pile at Pete's-oh well. There's a guy in R.I. I've been trying to hook up with forever. I never seem to have the time to roll down there. He's got some KLH 5s I'd like to pick up. A bit bigger speaker with a tweeter, two mids and the 11 or 12" woofer.

    Good job so far!

Ive seen pictures of those & when i did i thought of SDA's lol. My issue with my xover is in the dial. Something beyond me. I took them out. Cleaned Deoxit & nothing. I tried playing around with them with no results. Just gonna have them overhauled.... Pete did my cr2040 & it is still going strong & loves crs+'s :)

Very nice work. The cabinets look great.

I have a pair of Advent 2002, which are apparently a Henry Kloss design built to the Advent/4 spec after Jensen took over the company. I picked them up at Good Will for $8, needing a re-foam of the woofer, which was the reason that I bought them. I had wanted to try my hand at re-foaming. I then upgraded the XO capacitor to a Clarity Cap PX, the resistor to a Mills and binding posts. The cabinets and grills are still in great condition, though it looks like thin laminate over pressed wood.

These things impress the heck out of me for such a simple design. My son can't believe a paper cone tweeter could sound as clear and image so well.
