    ah, interesting.
the album I need to fix is kind of rare, so I'm a bit concerned about doing this correctly.

I don't have many albums, none to practice on!

You can always put it between 2 heavy pieces of something and stick it in the garage for awhile. Garages definitely get warm in the summer but not oven warm in case your worried about it. Just make sure the weight is evenly distributed.

BTW....you sure it's the album that's warped and not the operator ? :)

I have a TT outer ring which works great with warped vinyl.

I believe that the outer ring helps with any LP and not just warped vinyl.
Cost to much ?? Not to me. You must remember I wait for the fat cats to start vinyl and get quickly get tired of it. That usually saves me 60% on audio goodies. This guy was desperate to sell and I bought it for $100. ozsy5dtctnk7.gif

thanks for all the input here, guys.
I think I'd like to try one of those clamps. I like the idea there, both warp correction and damping.

P-man - those TT rings are kinda neat too. do you use just a ring, or a ring + clamp? not quite understanding how they work, exactly, so I'll check those out

for now I went ahead and ordered the Furutech disc flattener that agfrost recommended; two in fact. I mean, a real no brainer there, being so affordable and all.

Thanks D, good stuff, yeah, I was reading about something similar; this is a good tutorial.

I think I might try the glass or something, but just in the garage like Tony suggests, not the oven. and let it cool flat. maybe that's all it'll take. I'm not sure whether it was already warped, or if happened in the car on my way home from the shop last Summer during a 2hr stop at a coffee shop one warm eve. I was conscious of the possibility and had the albums flat on the floorboard, so, not sure. as Keiko mentions, and as I've seen in comments on threads/vids demonstrating this method, it seems that people have had mixed results, sometimes ending in damage. I can find this album again for $50 - $100, but seems I'd want to find a way to address this safely moving forward, as well, in any other albums I happen across. I really only pick up my absolute faves, but seems like they're all hard to find. I probably just need to find some better shops to deal with.

with my luck, I'd end up with this. but it's a double album, so at least I'd have two

In all seriousness, I remembered that several years ago a handful of guys here (Rockford Audio Society?) went in on the record flattener and shared it for all to treat their discs that needed it. Rich, Carl, Ricardo, Ted, and others...

I couldn't find the thread last night using the Vanilla search function but got it now using Google.

The price was "affordable" back in 2008. :wink:http://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/61601/tales-of-the-furutech-flattener

I use a weight not a clamp. Would you like to try one out ?? What table are you using ??

oh, gotcha - weights and clamps both sit on the spindle though, right? only a clamp puts positive downward force?

I'm in between tables right now, and not really sure where I'll end up quite just yet. I was just getting started last summer and was using Audio Technica's midline(?) LP120. gathered a few of my faves just to see what it was all about, but gave it up. feeling inclined to give it another shot, or at least get set up again to have the option.

What preamp? I've been looking at this one:

    Nightfall -

I first used a parasound P3 and P5. It never impressed me. Then when I purchased my new pre-amp (Cary SLP 05) I needed a separate phono pre, so I purchased a used Parasound zPhono. That was a real upgrade. After using the zPhono for a little bit I got a Parasound JC3. I am really liking it.

T - what would you say was the most significant upgrade piece, the zPhono or the JC3? significant improvement with JC3 over zPhono?

Skip good to point out, thanks. reading back, I see that my question was a bit incomplete/vague, and I think I misread/understood Todd's post at first. he was talking about how good apples are, and I'm asking whether he likes tangerines better than oranges. not sure where I was yesterday. Pluto. yes, musta been Pluto. thinking now that "Cary" and its requirement for a phono pre didn't even register? haha wtf...

after reading back, indeed, I understand that it was probably the Cary and "a" phono pre that was the "real upgrade" move - most significant; more than from the zPhone to the JC3 - and that's what I was meaning to ask.

I am curious as to the experience in going from the zPhono to the JC3, as well, though.

I think Skip is correct. The biggest improvement was the Cary. When I upgraded to the Cary I had to jump off into separate phono pres. I cannot comment on how the zPhono would have sounded with the P3 or P5 but the improvement I had once I upgraded the pre and phono pre was significant.

To answer your question Scott, about the difference in the zPhono and JC3. While the JC3 is more musical (less noise, blacker background, slightly more detail) I think it is like most other equipment upgrades. For the cost of the 2 pre's being compared I am not sure the difference is worth the extra cost. Considering the JC3 cost roughly 10-15 times more than the zPhono.

But then again I did not actually pay for the JC3. I traded my Halo A21 for it. So the upgrade was well worth it to me since I already had the A21 and no one was looking at it when I tried to sell it. At least that is how I convinced myself of the trade.

With all things considered I am very happy with the JC3. It works well with my system and will more than likely be the last phono pre I purchase. It now has moved me to question if my turntable/cartridge should be upgraded.

gotcha, yeah, although I see it now, I don't think it registered at first that you hadn't been able to use the Cary without addition of a phono pre, dehr, so yeah, I see now that it was the combo, and most likely the move to the Cary from the P5, making the more significant difference overall.

good info here Todd, thanks, and a good chuckle seeing more refined rabbit-hole tunnels unfolding before you, hehe :)
