preamp decision

well, I have had my belles 21a preamp since 2006 as my reference and the itch has hit to upgrade or at least try another type of sound.
I have been listening to an ultraverve 3 and placette active preamp.
first since i am not rich by any means i have to look at the costs of each.
the ultraverve new is $3000, the placette new is $7000. both preamps have been around for years and are highly thought of. the placette was in to be brought up to date in 2013 and be had for $1500 while the ultraverve will be new and i don't know how much i can beg it down in price.

soundwise the ultraverve has that big tube sound which i am in love with and the placette is a passive which does not have the weaknesses of passives but it is ss and does not have the tube richness i am used to but it is as transparent of a preamp that you can get.

being a cheap bas---d at heart i am torn between money and my heart.
what would you do?
i guess i should see how low i can get the price on the ultraverve first.

one other thing is the ultraverve makes my usher r 1.5 power amp say don't sell me :)

    3g's for a new tubed pre amp of that caliber is not so out of touch, matter of fact it's a bargain as far as new tubed pres of quality go.

    Go for it and don't look back.

    while the placette is very detailed and transparent i find that i am a tube guy at heart besides the guy contacted me today that he has a buyer if i didn't want the preamp.
    now to start begging on the price of the ultraverve :D

    There are two Dodd preamps on audiogon right now. I am not sure how they compare with the ultraverve but the Dodd gear is very nice.
