Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. I've owned five. The only one that had problems was dropped...repeatedly...because the seller had no idea how to package an amp...

I went and auditioned the Emotiva XPA1 Gen 2 (w/ 60w class a) last night, and I couldn't help myself. They were only nine months old came with VTI amp stands, original boxes and what not. He auditioned them for me on his Mirage Omd28's in moderately sound treated room. It was quickly clear that the XPA-1 Gen 2's are a seriously good amp. Having never hearing the Mirage's I couldn't determine any particular characteristics of the amp or speakers but that combo sounded fantasic. I couldn't help myself I had to try them for myself. Getting the amps in my G35 coupe proved to be quite a task.

I will not get a chance to really evaluate them for a few days. My BJC lc1 interconnects were to short to reach the mono's so I was forced to use some generics. Today is my sons birthday (turning 6) so the day will be filled with fun stuff for him. Thursday my youngest daughter turns 3 and we are having their birthday parties on Saturday, so its going to be a busy week.
What I did hear last night I liked and nothing jumped out at me as bright or harsh. As a matter of fact I think that the RTi's were even less harsh at higher volumes than with the ATI, probably do to the dramatic increase in power and headroom.

At 73 lbs each they are not likely to float my little boat.

I bet, that a nice amp. I strongly considered going with a Parasound A21 and I am sure I would have loved it. So far the big Emotiva's doing great. I ended up getting them with stands for $1700 and they still have more than 4 years left on the warranty. My initial impressions are that the xpa-1's did not in any way make the RTi12's too bright, but they did add some more sparkle on the top end compared to my ATI, which is a very warm sounding amp. The sparkle was welcomed though, because my room is extremely dead with almost no boundary gain. The ATI and RTi combo was very good but just lacked the headroom that I need for my 22x24 ft acoustically dead room. In this room anything less than loud would sound flat and un-involving. Late night sessions however were very pleasing at lesser levels. The XPA-1's are at least as revealing as the ATI but way more dynamic. With the extra wattage I do not worry to much about clipping, as my typical listening level is between -10and-15 at that level it is just moderately loud in my space. It is kind of bitter sweet my ATI is a beautiful sounding amp, and was never driven to clipping. Despite my frequent loud listening, the 120w ATI handled the big RTi's quite well. There was always that thought in the back of my mind though, wondering what the RTi's would sound like with a lot of power. My main reasoning for going with the Emotiva was it's ability to adequately power the RTi's to their maximum potential. The mono's do not even get slightly warm, even after hours of listening at -10db. Late night listening has been fun too, switching over to the 60 class A ensures I am getting the best the amp has to offer at lower levels. As expected they do get very warm in class A, but the sweet musicality the class A offers for late night listening has been a joy to listen too. At this point, I have yet to find anything the Emotiva is doing wrong. Yes, it could be said that it is slightly brighter than my ATI but I wouldn't call it a bright amp based on my experience over the last week, in my space of course. I have enjoyed the extra sparkle as it isn't harsh at all and it balanced nicely with the extra bump I am getting in the low end and the increase of dynamics in my room has put a big smile on my face. My thinking now is that my next upgrade will not be in amplification but maybe to Lsim's in about a year, who knows.
