    Can I put any cartridge on this, are they universal? I'm kind of confused about this. What is a P cartridge? What are non-P cartridges called?

    Shure M97xE seems to be an extremely popular entry-level-but-not-garbage recommendation all across the internet. I'll probably just go with that.

    I don't think I can use an MC cartridge until I get a separate phono preamp. My CA-1010's phono input can utilize both MM and MC but it has a channel out and needs to find its way to a shop.

    P-mount, technically T4P was a late "innovation" for user-friendly record playing. The cartridge simply plugs in to the arm; no alignment nor tracking force adjustment required (although there is a small setscrew to hold the cartridge in place... and many of the T4P turntables actually had provisions for fine balance and VTF adjustment).

    There are still P-mount cartridges & styli available but the selection is rather limited compared to, say, the mid to late 1980s.
