Ha,

This is my very first post, feels good to be on here :D.

My current set up is a DENON AVR-590/1610 I also have the Klipsch Quintet series with a POLK PSW110.

Now I'm a man of BASS, so I want to know what I need to do in order to feel an explosion or feel a kick and punch. Not necessarily the low end base (like the dark knight theme song) but that THUMPING bass, a door slam, a hard tackle... I feel it in my bones, my bones... ehm, sorry.

But I think you get what I mean.

Now plan was to get 2 TSI400's and a cs1 center and keep 2 of the klipsch for surround speakers.

Would that help?
Would that be worse?

All guidance is greatly appreciated.

:)

What I am going to say is going to hurt your feelings but your sub is a severe under-achiever.

It appears from what you want to spend that the budget isn't that high. That being said, I would look into a PSW505 and sell off that 110. Maybe if you can stretch the budget a bit further, a pair of them or something like the SVS PB1000.

Having started with a Klipsch SUB10 and SUB12, I can tell you that there is no replacement for displacement. Nowadays I rock a pair of SVS cylinders and when I demo them for people they always comment on the subs making the couch vibrate...the couch is 7 feet away from the nearest sub. ;)

Depends on a few things including your room size and overall budget.

If you need the bass, you probably need a better sub.

Instead of a cs1 I would get the cs2 for not much more money.

    Thanks guys!

I bought this sub as I was trying to be cheap. The room I have my set-up in isnt big at all. And in fact the psw110 does fine and I never have it maxed out, that said I was looking into upgrading that as well. But the BASS does fine on low end, but how does one get that mid range bass, the thuds, punches, kicks, and slams????

    Thank you all.

    tonyb Posts: 33,000
The 110 can't be doing fine if the mid bass is absent. Subwoofers take on some mid bass too depending on where you have it crossed over at. Your speakers are fairly small and the sub should be doing most the bass, low and mid.

To answer your question, bigger speakers, more power than the Denon 1610 can put out, and a better sub. Whats the budget btw....as that will dictate what everyone answers.

I guess we should start at the beginning, make sure what you have now is set up properly. Is the sub connected to the sub out on the receiver ? Do you have the speakers connected to the sub or receiver ? Where's is the crossover set at ? Did you set up the inputs on the receiver ? Have dvd/blu-ray player and how is that connected and set up ?

Pardon the thousand questions, we just need to know your getting all you can out of what you have first.

:| Oh, well I just plugged everything into the receiver. Im not sure about crossing over or anything to be honest.

    My Budget is $1500

Man, I thought the Denon receivers were good.
I was gonna upgrade to a newer Denon not sure what I need for what I desire though.

I dont need a HIGH end system just an awesome one, I always seek for most bang for buck, thats how I shop for anything.

So thanks to all of you, I will definitely get a new sub at least a new one, the SVS PB1000 maybe.
The center speaker will be the CS2.

Now I need some towers and surround speakers.
I was thinking the TSI400's but what would you all advise?

I plan to do a lot of gaming and music playing as well as Movies... all day... Call it baby cinema.

LOL....didn't read the manual to the Denon either did ya ? That could be part of your problem. Everything needs to be set up, the receiver, settings for the sub, speakers, the dvd player, TV if that's connected. You may not even be getting the proper surround formats which is why the sound isn't up to snuff.

Read the manual cover to cover, twice, so you understand it. Todays receivers are not plug and play like receivers of old.

Receivers to look at, anything by Pioneer with a SC designation. They hold their power better through all channels driven than most others. Also Yamaha Advantage line of receivers.

Speakers, Monitor 70's or RTIA5's, especially if your going to add a sub. The RTI's are a bit more dynamic than the monitor line. Subwoofers....SVS or HSU should work extremely well, or Polks DSW line or micro pro line.

Where is your sub placed in the room? Sometimes moving it a few inches will drastically change the sound.

Start from the beginning. Set all your speakers to small, and run your auto-cal program. Then tell us what you don't like.

You should try a SVS PB1000. They will take it back from you within 45 days or let you trade up full exchange for like a year.

    You guys are awesome!

Thank you for all of the replies.

I'll go through the manual and set up my speakers accordingly.

I currently have the sub sitting on the right of the Entertainment center, but at an angle towards us.

Guys about the surrounds, should I keep the Klipsch from the quintet series or should I consider something else?

I would say keep them for now and focus on the other upgrades. Unless of course you need to sell the whole Klipsch unit as a package to fund the upgrades. You can also buy a lot of this stuff on the used market at roughly half the cost of new.

    Thanks again.

Yeah, I've been on ebay searching for the speakers in need. Found out polk actually has an ebay outlet store, awesome. But its hard to find 2 black monitor 70's being sold as a pair. I'm actually going to sell my Denon receiver and upgrade, also selling the PSW10... I noticed earlier I put PSW110 but I actually have the PSW10...

I'll keep the Klipsch speakers for surround as you advised should be interesting.

I apologize for the double post, but would the STF-2 suffice?

    http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html

    Or the Rythmik LV12R

We watch a lot of martial arts movies as well as football games, we kinda want to hear/feel the hits.

Also, is this a good receiver for my needs according to the speakers I am going to purchase.

Even though I'm a big fan of Onkyo products and have been very impressed by the units of theirs that I've purchased, I'd say "No", that receiver is not a good choice for your needs. You want to make sure that the one you get has preamp outputs for all of the channels, not just for the subwoofer. That way, down the road, you can add external amplification to drive at least your front three channels, leaving the receiver's power amp to drive just the surrounds. That, in itself, will be a major upgrade, performance-wise, over what most any AVR can do.

I still use, almost daily, an old Onkyo TX-SR805 that I bought new about six years ago. I let it power my surrounds and I use Adcom amps to power my front Polk SDAs and center CS-400i.

I dont know what any of that means :s

So now I have to get a super receiver and buy an external amp to go with it???

There's a lot of members around here that swear by the deals they get at Accessories 4 Less. I've never used them, but from my understanding, they sell manufacturer-refurbished items with the warranty on them.

Here's a unit that has all the bells and whistles you need, lots of power and is 48% off retail right now: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktxnr838/onkyo-tx-nr838-7.2-network-a/v-receiver-w/atmos-hdmi-2.0-wi-fi/1.html

There's members around here (ie. Gudnoyez) with lots of love for that specific Onkyo, too.

Just look at the pictures of the back of the unit. You want to be sure that there are "pre out" connections there for your Front, Center, Surround and Subwoofer speakers, at least, not just for the Subwoofer (like it is on the TX-NR646 that you linked). Then, if in the future, you want to add more power, you can simply add one or more external power amplifiers. However, the TX-NR838 that I linked just may have enough power to satisfy your needs. If not, you can add the additional power without having to buy a new/different receiver - thereby, you're "future-proofed", at least for a while.

Geez, that R838 is expensive though... I guess its between Pioneer, Yamah, and Onkyo? Where does that leave Denon and Sony? I prefer a mid range AVR with a lot of power and something that I wont have to upgrade for years... 7-10 :hushed:

You also live in a hotbed for Polkies. You might reach out and see if you can hear some of their excellent systems and give you a frame of reference. This would be a great option so you don't spend money on items that don't do what you want.

Idk, I'm taking all of my advice from you guys. I want an excellent sounding system that will last years. I guess I'm a wannabe Polkie :Do:)

But I always feel weird buying used equipment that hasnt been refurbished by the manufacturer. There is no telling if juice spilled on the thing or not :hushed:

Again, all of you guys' input has been very welcoming and appreciated.

    Thank you.

I'm actually on my state issued work pc, so that IP is blocked for whatever reason so I cant view that link.

My Klipsch quintet sounds very crisp and clear and are loud for their size, the center speaker is actually the best out of them all.
That said, I'm all about bass bout that bass bout that bass no treble...
No I'm joking, trebles tight, trebles tight...

Seriously though, I was planning on this set up:

    Receiver - ?
Front Speakers - Monitor 70's or RTI A5's
    Center Speaker - CS2 or csia6
Surrounds - Currently using (4)Klipsch quintets. (Possibly change to Monitor 30's or RTI A1's)

Yeah most state and federal agencies block Craigslist per their "default" security policies. It is due to their continued use in the sex trade and flags them in most web appliances used by those agencies.
