Crackling Woofers - Sub Amp Bad?

Amp turns on as usual, but once given any amount of substantial volume (Let's say past a 2 on a 1 to 10 scale) the woofers crackle and there's loud distortion. The woofers are all in great shape, so what gives?
Too many good quotes to list..waiting for some fresh ammo. :)

Most likely, the spiders are unglued. Is it just a rattling sound as the volume increases? Remove the back cover and inspect the woofers.
If you push on the cones carefully, you'll actually see the spiders coming away from the basket. It's fairly a quick fix if you know how to glue them back. I had the same issue with mine and sent them to Polk for the repairs. I'm not too comfortable with those kind of repairs.
You can probably fix them with some epoxy, However, I'd send them in to have them done the right way.

Chefkungfu, I had that problem on the SRT's and had them repaired, but this is on the 3000's and I've made sure it's not the spiders coming loose. I swapped amps around and it does the same thing on a tower that plays loud and clear with a different amp. I'm going to try replacing caps and see what that leads to.

I was wrong, it's coil rub on the lower woofer :( I figured this out after realizing that the reason the amp acted goofy in the other tower was because a speaker wire connector had become disconnected, throwing the amount of resistance all out of whack. After getting things stable again the amp worked fine, and the woofer in the other tower continued rattling. Darn. Looks like I need a new MW 8500! Sell me yours Chef!
