New Speakers

I am planning on replacing my Lsim 703 speakers soon. I plan on staying with bookshelves. My budget is $2500-$3000. They will be powered by a Parasound Model 2250 amp through a Yamaha RX-a 2010 receiver. I am in need of some suggestions.

What is it about the 703s that you find lacking or wanting to improve on?

what type of sound are you looking for?
    what are your music tastes?
    room dims?
list all of your system including cables.

you do realize that a speaker purchase in this price range will cause a chain reaction to upgrading the rest of your system!

Altough they are a great speaker and I do like them a lot they are 3 years old. In my world of audio that is old. I need to step up in the speaker chain because I do believe there is better out there in the price I am looking at. Don't get me wrong I really like the 703's but I hear a calling to step up. I plan on keeping the 703's and maybe using them to replace my rear surronds. I have been in the audio mode since the late 60's and usually replace anything that is over3-4 years old.

You should already have the best and most expensive bookies made. If you started in the late 60's and move up the ladder every 3-4 years. You say you like your 703's a lot but you're not saying what you want to improve.

So in order for these guys to help you need to tell them why you want different speakers. Step up to what...what are you looking for, sound wise? It might be something else in your system you need to address, not your speakers.

That is for sure a price range where you are going to have to listen to at least 3 or more prospects before you will know what you want to spend your money on. Also, you are at the point where you might consider better electronics. A good stereo preamp might offer the detail and seperation you are after. Find one with HT Bypass if your system is for Music and HT. Something like the Parasound Halo P5.
    http://www.parasound.com/halo/p5.php
Also, If you go that far back in audio then you now that many love the tube sound for midrange as well.

Anyway, be sure to audition the Kef R300
    https://www.kefdirect.com/index.php/speakers/hi-fi-speakers/r-series/r300-bookshelf-speaker-pair-1196.html?gclid=CjwKEAjw9uypBRD5pMDYtsKxvXcSJACcb9AYZdi-1kq919J4RjU8wGa_CUxcwo0uhtMme7msIisf8hoCi1nw_wcBe

Then there are at least a million more, Harbeth, Usher, Dynaudio, Sonus Faber, B&W, Legacy, etc...

I'm more inclined to think the OP is just a "Ramblin' Man" - looking to change things up.

Harbeth or Spendor or Revel or ATC has some offerings in that price range that may pair well with his electronics.

    {WLDock - gets credit for the first mention of Harbeths}

Erik, you hit the nail on the head. Change for change sake is me. Trey wants $1200-1400 to do the crossovers. Thanks marvda1. Replacing the other components will start in the winter or early spring. I'm just interested in speakers right know, thank you.

Do they have to be new, though?

Seems like for change ups, going used would be the better vaule - no sales tax, hits on depreciation, selling used after you bought new with warranty transfer limitations to the next buyer....etc.

Get rid of that Yamaha AVR and get yourself a REAL pre-amp, or even a tube pre? Your Polks will sound like a new set of speakers!

As for anything more than 3-4 years old being too old. Well, you're talking to the WRONG guy here. I love the "vintage" stuff. More bang for your buck and far warmer!,

But a lot of guys here "do" love to constantly flip gear. Have you seen Bunuel's That Obscure Object of Desire? Take a look and then think "audio" instead of "woman"!

This ^ ^ ^ ^ A higher quality pre would give you a bump up in sound quality, such that you may no longer feel the need to replace the LSiM's, even though they're getting long in the tooth. I would try a tube pre.

At first I listened to the psb synchrony one B's. They were very go. A lot of detail. But the lsim 703's were receiving very good reviews. Although I could not audition them locally I purchased them without listening first. They are are very good speaker for that price range. Trying to audition speakers in my area (mid-Hudson valley) is impossible. The nearest brick and mortar shop is 80 miles away in NYC. Travelling there is out of the question.

I checked these Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor M bookies out at BB's Magnolia center, connected to $35K-$40K worth of McIntosh equipment, in a "fully-treated" listening room, using my music (several CDs and SACDs). I preferred the LSiM703s over them in every way, except one - build quality. They are an extremely well-built, very sexy (gorgeous!) pair of speakers, especially when paired with the specially-made SF stands. Yes, $2750 each (plus $1100 stands) does go a long way in build quality!

That's why I agree with vcwatkins above. There's likely something that's not working in the OP's setup, synergistically. To each their own though - and all just MHO.

The obscure object in Bunuel's film is played by two women who look a little alike. Most men cannot or do not immediately realize this. The main point of the film is about the fantasies men have about the perfect woman, the most desirable woman. When I suggest substituting audio for woman it is a logical substitution with the lesson being that there IS NO PERFECT audio system just a fanatical and addicting pursuit that is as mesmerizing and frustrating as what happens to Fernando Rey in the film. No drinks involved, just a lack of familiarity with the work of Luis Bunuel, one of the great surrealist filmmakers!

I suppose we could do a TED talk on this. There are days when what I know makes me want to vomit! This is ONE of them! (one of those all too familiar Soren moments-Fear and Trembling and the Sickness Unto Death).
