Tube help needed.

I sent the below to a few members via PM, but in hindsight perhaps I should have potsed for greater visibility:

Need some advice/tube wisdom. I'm trying out some used preamps and the one that sounds decent and is in my price range is the Dynaco PAS-4 although I have yet to try out the phono. I actually think it's a very close second to the CJ PV2 that I am also auditioning, but that one is a bit out of our budget right now. The PAS-4 manual states it originally came with 12AX7(ECC83) line? and 6DJ8(6922) for I believe the phono stage? I opened up the unit and it has Tungsol 1207 and for phono Sylvania 34167, 82219, 6DJB and one that has no markings at all. If I were to keep this unit what would you suggest for tube changes, if any? From what I have read these preamps usually had a 6922 in it and suggested tube would have been 6N1P?

OK, I just read the manual a little more and now realize the line stage tubes are the 82219 and the unmarked tube, the other 4 are the phono.

Heh -- I've never seen a PAS-4. Looks like it was Panor-era "Dynaco"? At any rate, nice looking piece of hardware; looks like it is chock-full of WIMA caps (not a bad thing at all). The only thing I see that I don't particularly care for is putting everything on one big PCB.

    Schematic at:
    http://dynacotubeaudio.forumotion.com/t1400-dynaco-pas-4-schematics-now-added-to-the-schematic-sticky-above (from Bob Latino)

    Mo' info at:

So -- I'm sorry, what's the question? Are you asking about 6DJ8/6922 subs, or whether a 6N1P can be back substituted for a 6922? If the latter, I think that the filament current draw of the 6N1P is higher than a 6922 (i.e., the latter can sub for the former, but not vice versa -- I think...).

EDIT: Ok -- I registered at the Dynaco forum (which I'd never seen before today...) and downloaded the schematics. V1 and V4 are 12AX7; the other four tubes are 6922. The 12AX7s are used as the MM phono preamp tubes (just as in the earlier, "real" Dynaco PAS-2/PAS-3 preamps). Generically, I'd suggest either a pair of 5751s to replace the 12AX7s -- or (if there's enough gelt in the ol' piggybank) a pair of gen-u-ine Amperex or Telefunken ECC83s. I believe the 5751 has a little less gain (amplification factor) than a 12AX7, so they might not be the best choice for a phono preamp.

For the 6922s... well, the canonical choice would be four Amperex 7308 tubes... but they, too, are 'spensive.

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to tubes. Heck, I just learned the right way to take them out! I don't understand how you know what tubes will work in a piece. I listed what's in there now to see if anybody feels they could/should be swapped out for somethng else. At this price point($400) I'm not sure I could do much better on a tubed pre w/phono? I am a bit nervous about buying something this aged though.

I have been very happy with my Dared pre. It was my first dive into tubes.

I loved the time I spent using Paul's Dared preamp, I do think you would like it as your pre Bob! and most of them have a remote. and finding one at 300 is a nice price and leaves money for a phono amp maybe enough for a "Bugle 2" phono amp? and several here can help with the tubes for it.

Decisions, decisions...this is worse than picking out paint colors when remodeling! I wish the dealer had one for me to try out. I guess I culdn't go wrong though as it seems from the above comments I could easily recover my $$ on a re-sell.
