best ways/device to listen to music wireless

Each of these options have their pros and cons as to your original post. The Hapurs or the Sound mate gives you the flexibility you were seeking. It can function through your router or as a stand alone wireless solution. You could stream audio from your pc using Jriver or one of the other media solutions or one of your guests could connect to it directly and stream media from their own device. The one drawback to that would be they would possibly need to install the appropriate app to connect to the device. I like the simplicity of it and the fact that it is not Bluetooth which is in my experience can be a bit temper mental at times. The one other issue would be you have to use the internal DAC with the device which I read you prefer not to do. I do not know what your current Dac is.

Actually, the hapurs/soundmate also has an optical/spdif output in addition to the analog out. He could use his dac assuming the dac will accommodate an optical cable. This is how I am using mine. Optical connection from the hapurs to my integrated.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant -
This is frustrating, the hapurs seem like a good idea, it is cheap and does pretty much what I need it to do...
But I can't find it anywhere in canada!!

This seems to be the same thing and available in Canada. Keep in mind you will likely still need to install DLNA rendering software on your pc. Jriver, airfoil, media monkey, to name a few. These are relatively cheap, jriver is my choice for local files, but airfoil works great for sending, spotify, Pandora, I heart, etc. over DLNA, which jriver doesn't do at this point.

Could one plug a laptop (cheap with external hard drive) in the DAC and control that laptop wirelessly? From other devices?

damnusernames, yes. Right now I am using jriver with a usb drive into my laptop going into the dac. I can control it with the laptop or gizmo via my cell.
Soon as I have time, I am going to see if the iscsi part on the nas would work since the laptop would or should see it as a "drive" and just point jriver to it. In theory i think it should.
