Email from Paypal? Uhhh, no.

I can't be the only one who's ever gotten this, but in the interest of enlightening those who never have, I got an email tonight saying that they limited my Paypal account due to several attempts to access my account from my email with incorrect passwords.
Call me crazy, but seeing as how everything else gets hacked sooner or later, I clicked on the link, but thankfully Windows warned me that this site was unsafe. The web address is
WWW dot COULLIER dot COM, even though the link looks legit. Effin' spammers...

Here's the body of the email I got-

This is an important information regarding you PayPal Account

We have recently detected that different computer user had attempted gaining access to your PayPal account, and multiple invalid password was attempted with your email. Your PayPal account has been temporarily limited until we hear from you.

It is now necessary to re-confirm your account information to us. If this process is not completed immediately, We will be forced to permanently suspend your PayPal account as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes.

So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Careful. Sometimes clicking on that link will get a virus or worse.

Harry...did you really have to read any further than that first attempt at a real sentence by the spammers to know that the email wasn't actually from PayPal? ;)

TK, you're right of course, but I kinda missed that on the first glance... :/
And the link is there, and I still think it looks like it could be real. They are getting clever with their scams, no doubt about that. Maybe the mods can remove the hyperlinked text in the OP, I wouldn't want anyone to have problems over this.

So far so good on the virus thing, I don't think it was planted to infect PCs, just to get unsuspecting people to divulge their account info. This time, anyway.

That's happened to me twice in the past and one of the reasons I stopped using paypal. Could never straighten out the account with a real person on the phone. If I can't talk to a real person, for anything, I don't use the service and I don't put my personal info out there.

I get that one at least once a month. Forward it to the PP security site at spoof@paypal.com.

A hyperlink may say anything in the text you see. I usually hover the pointer over it WITHOUT clicking on it to see what the actual link is. Clever!

I recently got an email from PayPa1.com. At a quick glance, it was VERY difficult to see the letter "l" was replaced with the number "1". Sneaky bastages!

I've gotten a couple of these in last 2 months. Thanks decal for where to send them. I will do that instead of deleating them.

    Everyone be careful.

Not to go off on a rant BUT!

How many times have you all been told (T.V news, Microsoft, your mother and just about everybody else on the planet etc..) NEVER NEVER EVER click on a link in an e-mail or forward one. If you must go to the web site i.e. PayPal without clicking on the link and check it out. Also it's a big help in blocking spam if you set your e-mail client (Thunderbird, Outlook etc.. ) to view all e-mails as plain text, that means no graphics, html, java, or other junk. Also and this is Important pay close attention to the senders e-mail address if it's one you don't know or recognize then it is most likely spam. And never have your e-mail client set to automatically preview e-mails.

Believe it or not but I have been doing this with my e-mail ever since I got an e-mail account and have never received any viruses and usually any span I get (which is very very little, less than one a month if that) comes from someone forwarding an e-mail to someone that has my e-mail address. If you must forward an e-mail don't, cut and paste it.

    End of rant.

Over the past six months or so, I have gotten this email sometimes two or three times per week, sometimes two or three times within an hour. I always forward it to spoof@paypal.com, from which I usually (not always) first get an acknowledgement with lengthy instructions about PayPal's practices and then later an email saying that I was correct, it was a phishing email.

Just be careful. PayPal says they never send an email without using your name in the text.

I occasionally get urgent notices regarding the impending PERMANENT suspension of my Wells Fargo account due to unauthorized activity being detected. Trouble is...... I don't bank with Wells Fargo, never have. I always reply with a message that isn't allowed to be repeated here on Club Polk............ :p

I get those all the time. WF and Chase and I don't bank with either of them. I guess there are suckers out there that fall for it...

Ditto, except I just "deep six" the emails and do not bother to reply.

I wish there were a way to reply to spammers/phishers with an email that would cause them the grief they are trying to cause those whom they are trying to harm. After all, it would be merely following the Golden Rule -- well sort of in a a perverse way! >:)

This is just about the worst thing you can do short of giving them your bank, credit card, etc.. account numbers all your doing here is letting them (spammer, phishers) know they got a live e-mail address to keep hitting.

^^^^ This along with what I posted earlier about how to setup your email client is the best way to deal with these scumbags.

Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do about these guys other than ignore them. They will go away after awhile, a long while.

Yesterday I received an email from Wells Fargo saying that my credit card balance of $4314 was now due. Needless to say I didn't click the link and went directly to the WF app. My balance was much less... Obviously it was yet another type of spam.

Many years ago I had received an email from Wells Fargo stating that they had just improved their password restrictions and that mine was too weak and had to be updated. At the time my password was actually ridiculously bad and my first reaction was "Crap, I really need to take care of that ASAP!" So I clicked the link and started entering my old password. Right before I pressed submit, a doubt came to me and I double checked the address. It wasn't wellsfargo.com...

I have yet to fall for one of these, but it's so easy to make a stupid mistake... If you're preoccupied with other things, it can be easy to oversee the possibility of a scam and fall for it.

They can " keep hitting" my email if they want. My reply pretty much conveys the message that they'll be wastin' their time and that their mother is of questionable upbringing and moral foundation. I've never received any snappy comebacks to date. Pretty sure they move on to greener pastures. ;)
