I have almost finished rebuilding my SDA-1As.
So far I have completed the following list.
1. Upgraded the capacitors and resistors to Sonicap/Mills.
2. Upgraded the stereo tweeters to RDO-194s.
3. Deleted the dimensional tweeter.
4. Applied Dynamat Extreme to the driver and PR baskets.
5. Glued the driver magnets with Loctite Power Grab.
6. Upgraded to Cardas binding posts.
7. Installed #8-32 hurricane nuts for all drivers, PR and tweeter.
8. Upgraded the interconnect cable to 12 ga.
9. Upgraded the interconnect with Speakon connectors
10. Added 3/4" Sonic barrier behind the tweeters and drivers.
Future mods are to spike them and rewire them internally because I found the old wiring was starting to corrode.
I am very happy with their sound. I have been driving them with a 20 year old Denon AVC-3030 integrated amp while Musical Concepts modifies my Hafler DH-500 amp and DH-110 preamp.
Well the amp is back. I pulled the preout jumpers and patched it to the Denon 3030. The combination of the speaker modifications recommended by this forum and the modified Hafler 500 amplifier is simply stunning. I don't listen to my system; I listen to the music. I am hearing things that I did not know existed and at volumes that fill the room without any fatigue. I am blown away with the sound and I don't even have the Hafler DH-110 preamp driving the 500.
The preamp is coming tomorrow and it should be special. John Hillig's vast experience with Hafler equipment is to be taken seriously. Oh, and by the way he recommends 300 hours of music or white noise for a very good break in and more for the full benefit.
If there are people out there that have vintage Hafler equipment I recommend that you give John a call and have a talk (musicalconcepts.com). He also modifies Adcom.
He is going to supply me with the wire that he uses for his amps to rewire my speaker internals. He said the wire is nothing special that sounds special.
