I was thinking on a tube headphone amp & tube cd player i already have which isnt being used lately. I see the tube amp has volume control & a source can be plugged in the back. I listen to cans often when the mrs's is doing her online test/studying & id like to get new cans also (budget 300.00-/+ on cans) ? So if you have any thoughts on if a tube headphone amp is a good idea & any thoughts on a new set of cans (must be so wifey cant hear me 3 ft away) i would appreciate thoughts/feedback. TIA

If you don't want the wife to hear you then you probably want closed back headphones and these are nice and at a good price.

If she don't mind a little sound then get either the Sennhiser HD 600 they are on sale.

The HD 600s are only $11 over your budget, the HD 650s only $30 over your budget.

I have 2 tube headphone amps, the Woo WA3 and the Schiit Valhalla 2 and some Grado Rs2i's & Senn HD 650 and 598's = I like the Senn HD650 the best as the Grado's are much brighter sounding and the Senn's are a lot warmer.

I have never heard the Beyerdynamic DT 770, but they also have a lot of fans, which really makes it a tough call on which way to go.

I love tube headphone amps and when you add a CD player to them, it can be a sweet little setup.

Well i ended up passing on the tube headphone amp. I couldnt see paying 5-600 on the little guy. So i bought this last week & still waiting for it. I went with int amp & i will see how the headphone section on it sounds & im curious how this tube amp will sound on the Monitor 11 w/Peerless tweets all hooked together with the matching Yaqin SD30a cd player. I have ordered a few extra tubes-cheapo's So if anyone has recommendations on different better tubes please dont hesitate. I will listen to stock ones for a bit & then roll some better ones in it in time2tfssy2c4acs.jpg

I look forward to playing with it. It will be my first tube amp so there is gonna be alot of questions later on-such as bias/meter purchase & how to use it-as im not not ashame to say i have no idea. I watched Utube a few clips & it looks very easy & eager to learn. I will be able to tell more once i get unit & see where to do it & read manual

  • I have the Silk Audio version of that amp. Mine has a vu meter on the front and came with Blue glass 6CA7s in it. I have really enjoyed it driving my Monitor 10a's. I run it 6 to 8 hours a day with no issues.tcd4dflqygos.jpg

Thats a sweet unit there. I read your Jan12'th post. Good to see someone is running one of those on 10's. Im looking forward to getting it & rolling some tubes in it. Once i get it i will run it for a bit & then seek upgrades on tubes. I run buffers with multiple tubes & enjoy it alot. So i think this will be interesting foot in the door to tubes

Marvin is a great guy and helped me a lot with my Mc100b also, he does have some very good advise :) and he & SR would know what to set your bias to.

and if you have a multimeter it is easy to check your bias by using the 2 holes with white plastic by each power tube and you just put the positive in the + and neg in the - and then using the supplied wrench goes into a another hole that lets you adjust each of the 4 tubes till the are at the correct setting which I do not know for your Amp.

Got better this morning. Hooked it up & listened to Dark Side of Moon on the 11's & was in bliss. At 9:00/15 on dial it was perfect. Brought it up to 10:00 & to much for me. Even with the stock tubes i was very impressed. Everything seems to be where i would have it adjusted on a receiver as im not into heavy bass anyways. Peerless tweets sounded very chimmy :) with the chimes n bells. Had a couple speedbumps & thanks to Dave WMG he helped me out. Thanks Dave. Time to let it break in & enjoy. I think its a great foot in the door to tubes imo. Price was perfect. I will take a couple of pics in min & then time to chill & shake this flu.

Did notice 1) dead quiet when cd is stopped.... 2) run out of oil in house. No problem. Turn the amp on. This thing throws out some heat

Had the unit warming up at 5:30 this morning. 6:00 i hit play & started the day with Allman Bros - Eat A Peach & its smoking hot & sounds sweet. Surprised i havent woke the kiddo at 9:30 on dial  dads play day. Cant wait to get other tubes in it & adjusted perfect. Time to break it in some before exploring. Unit is awesome. Step aside Marantz (no disrespect) but time for this boy to go up the chain with some nice tube gear
