I am still afraid of buying a SACD player. I am totally sold on the sound, but, I am afraid of buying the next "BETA Videotape" Is there any indication that Sony is planning to "share" or "sell" the technology or rights? It really is a jaw droppingly good invention!

SACD is here to stay..I don't think you should be concerned with the fate of SACD. As a matter of fact, there are more reissue of album on hybrid SACD. The fate of DVD-Audio is the one that I think is in jeopardy, but that is just my personal opinion, due to the limited availability of software. If you go with a universal player, such as the Pioneer DV563-SA (Best Buy, $139), you should be fine.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I would like to know what you mean by "share or sell" the technology. Many manufacturers are making the equipment to play SACDs on, including Marantz, Denon, Pioneer, Sharp and many audiophile brands. This technology is out there for all manufacturers to license. As far as the software, almost every record company is on the bandwagon, and there are new SACD titles being announced every day. I really think that it is a safe bet to jump into SACD, and the 5.1 surround sound can't be beat.

He may mean that Sony really has kept a stranglehold on release rights for new SACD's. I also think they are here to stay, but they need to release some more mainstream titles. I am picking up a Denon, in addition to the SACD I run now, simply because there are more titles for me in that genre. I am moving the SACD into 2CH duty.

The other manufacturers made the right decision going universal, it's a win-win situation for the consumers of either format. Universal is the way to go IMO.

It really came to a head, when I saw the Star Trek: Nemesis soundtrack on SACD....are you F'N kidding me???!!! Ridiculous.

I agree with this and is why I went Universal. The dichotomy for me though is that in my quest for seperates the Universal is a piece of gear thats far from a seperate.

Oh well looks like I'll have to suffer with the Denon 2900 for a long time;)

while i do hope that both sacd and dvd audio is here to stay, i'm not sure how you can say that dvd audio is in trouble? Dvd audio has far more record labels to work with than sacd does right now, as well as the fact that it will play dolby digital music in any player, but not high resolution audio. Both formats are great and i own both types of discs and it's good to see the number of universal players coming out, but with SACD all i keep thinking about is what happened to mini disc because sony didn't allow for other labels to use it. Just my 2 cents.

I have a great science fiction disc on SACD, it is called SCI FI IN HIGH FI, (audio Fidelity AFZ 012). This disc contains a lot of different songs from different movies, including STAR WARS, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, BUCKAROO BANZAI AND MANY MORE. It is great, a full orchstra doing some great science fiction music.

If DVD-A has more record labels to work with then why are there only 800 or so releases in that format vs 1900 SACD's? The fact is that almost every record label has SACD releases, even Universal which backed DVD-A from the beginning has come over to the SACD camp. I don't know where you got the idea that Sony isn't letting other labels use SACD, but it's not true. On the other hand it seems that Sony has started to dabble in DVD-A, but on a very limited basis. DVD-A has problems with dual layered discs while SACD hybrids will play in any CD player. That and the fact that while DVD-A has the potential to do 24/192 not many of them actually do. The bottom line is that SACD has been accepted by the audiophile crowd and DVD-A has not. Look at how many dedicated high-end SACD players are on the market vs DVD-A players, that should spell it out pretty easily for you.

I heard my first and only SACD back in 2000. I was blown away by the fullness of the sound. The guy that auditioned it for me AFOAF who is the first on the block to get EVERYTHING! told me (BACK IN 2000 PLEASE REMEMBER) that Sony was playing hardball with the rest of the A/V manufacturers like they did with the Beta max and advised me to hold off buying one until they either got over themselves or everyone else developed something similar... ala VHS. I never considered DVD-A similar to the sound of the SACD so I never gave it another thought. Now that I have brought this thread up, I see that SACD is here to stay. Thanks for all your opinions!

lets face it.. SACD has more and better titles out than DVD-a does currently. DVD-a will prob never catch up either.

I think both camps did a horrible job of promoting their hi res formats. CC has both SACD and DVD-a set ups in their stores here.. both are always turned off when i got shopping there.

I went with DVD-a a few years back. I'm now thinking of getting a universal player so I can dabble in SACD. For the better titles out there. TO be honest i'm getting more into 2 channel audio now that i thought i ever would. I may still ditch the hi res discs all togehter and move on instead.

That's what angers me the most, is the poor store support of the formats. You mention SACD and they look ay you like you just arrived from Mars. Poor selection at B&M's. It all depends on your tastes as far as music selection.

Online is the only avenue for real support.

I listen to 2 channel SACD 99% of the time.
