NOS Tubes

Just got a quad set of genuine NOS Mullards from Upscale Audio ($500 :# ) for my Rogue Perseus Magnum. The Perseus was just upgraded to "Magnum" status and everything is sounding great. Having spent that ungodly amount of money on tubes, I was wondering if it's a good or bad idea to let the Perseus burn-in with the NOS tubes installed. I don't want to have to buy another quad set of tubes at that price for the next several years so I want them to last. Thoughts?

Thanks a ton fam!

You could use OEM tubes to burn in the unit but you will need the burn in the mullards as well. The advantage of using the OEM tubes if the unit had an early life failure that takes out a tube/s.

I'd say burn them in all together. You like the sound so why take them out, it will only get better.

I think I'd agree with gce here, but I also hate to see you sell the Rogue Stereo 90, seem a great fit to that preamp, but I know you like those W4S mono's.

I applaud you for buying $500 tubes.. that's what I would do too. I think if you want to burn in the component, I would do it with the OEM tubes and then burn in the NOS tubes a little. Just be careful, tubes always have a limited life, but given that, I doubt you'd ever use it up.

Congrats on the great set of tubes man!

What specific Mullard tube(s) are we talking about here? Different tubes have different life spans; so if shorter I would recommend not burning in the pre-amp with the NOS tubes installed. If longer, hell burn them in all together.

Not sure what tube the Perseus uses. The Rogue website doesn't state which tube type, which is strange. (I am guessing 12AU7's?, but could be a few others).

Overall, I would suggest using cheaper tubes if you are not doing critical listening while the pre-amp is burning in. Then, after a couple hundred hours switch to the Mullards to burn them in and enjoy the music.

My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

i would not burn them in together. i would want to hear what the pre upgrades sound like then see if the nos tubes take the sound up from there.

Good point, or vice versa. Here the NOS tubes first then hear the OEM tubes. I think Rogue uses Electo Harmony.

I put some vintage Sylvanias, the RCA red base 6SN7s in my Rogue 99 Super Magnum. Wow is all I can say!

Congrats and good luck with your Perseus!
