  • I tried this stuff on my ole Rotel but went back to the original mat.
I thought it was departing something on the vinyl and/or thought
it changed the sonics in a bad way.

I'll apologize prospectively for going back to the new Pioneer PLX-1000 after being dismissive of it before :-P

I was thumbing through the current Stereophile (paper copy!) today & discovered there's a short but interesting article on this new Pioneer by Herb Reichert.

I still have my heart set on the Orbit Plus with the Grado Blue! Just wish there were more reviews on this Pioneer and this Onkyo. I should still go check the Onkyo out they got one at a place I frequent the other day so I just might even though you scared me off with the Super Oem's and Hanapins Mr Hardy.

I wasn't trying to scare you off, believe it or not -- I don't think it's a bad thing, it's just... a thing. Folks shouldn't assume that a component is a Pioneer, or Onkyo, or Music Hall, etc. when it's built by a third party.

It's nothing new -- in the 1970s, numerous brands sourced their turntable from a Japanese manufacturer called CEC. Marantz, Yamaha, and (some) Radio Shack turntables are good examples. They were all made to the brands' specs, but the differences were largely (though not exclusively) cosmetic. I think that the Hanpin situation today is basically analogous -- although the cosmetic differences tend to be minor (i.e., the common heritage of the products is more obvious).

In the early days of hifi cassette decks (almost an oxymoron but not quite!), numerous "full line" brands used the basic Nakamichi 500 two-head, top-load deck transport and/or electronics as the basis of their early and/or entry level cassette decks. Example brands include Yamaha, Sonab, and harman/kardon.

These Hanpin manufactured turntables appear to be provoking a lot of discussion on audio forums. I consider that to be a good thing!

If I didn't have an SL-1200MK2 as a secondary table, the Pioneer table would interest me. From what I have been seeing in forums and in Youtube reviews though, although the Pioneer looks on the surface like an SL-1200 Technics clone there are many differences. The key complaints from those who have purchased the Pioneer table is the quality of the electronics inside, the overall cheapness of the construction quality compared to the old design Japanese made Technics table, and the physical performance as a DJ table. Some of the reviews from DJs who have actually purchased the table and used it are pretty harsh. The conclusion I've been seeing most often is that if someone already has a working SL-1200 table the Pioneer table would be a significant step down in quality even though it would be new and with a warranty and appears to have some considerable design improvements. The Stereophile review didn't use it for a DJ environment, which may be why the review is mostly positive.

Didn't check out the Onkyo as planned, still want that Orbit plus with that Grado Blue, I still think that's gonna be a decent table.

Hello I'm new to this site but have read this thread with lots of interest and found it while checking out the new Onkyo DD turntable. First I'm glad to see Onkyo getting back into the vinyl game especially with a DD turntable. Now having owned many DD turntables in my lifetime I am a little biased but belt drives do have their advantages and IMO have their own sound which I also find enjoyable! I'm not here to debate that battle which will never be won on either side.
But I do want to comment on the new Onkyo CP-1050 which may answer some of the folks questions in this thread.
First off I agree with everyone this looks like a clone especially a Stanton. This makes total sense, Stanton is now owned by Gibson Guitar and within the last year Gibson also acquired a major share of Onkyo USA. Their combined now and using the same OEM manufacturing, why not!
Now for those folks who commented (complained) that these are OEM manufactured this is nothing new especially with the Japanese made turntables. If you remember back in the heyday there were really only three (maybe four - Victor?) major manufacturers of turntables in Japan . The two majors Sony and Matsushita (Panasonic Technics) had the manufacturing power to design and build their own from the ground up whereas most of the other companies contracted out their designs to a third company that I refer to above. This company being Micro Seiki, which in addition to their own fine turntables either partially or fully engineered and manufactured a majority of the turntables sold by most of the other Japanese manufacturers. You can reference this fact to the Vintage Knob Audio Museum which is a wealth of information on vintage audio gear and their manufacturers.
So if you compare those great vintage turntables of the 70's and 80's OEM is not necessarily a bad thing as long as the QC is maintained and the end result is a reliable product that makes good music.
That's my take anyway, but I'm just an old blow hard that 's been in this hobby too long.....LOL. Now if only Polk would reissue their Monitor 10's , that would be something wouldn't it?

Thus the "but not quite" -- actually I'd probably be looking for a 1000ZXL first.

    1000zxllimited.JPG

There were a handful of not-half-bad cassette decks. Nakamichi, Tandberg and even Technics and (gasp) Pioneer (one of the last of which was also branded "Phase Linear") had some that could almost keep up with a good quality reel to reel deck (at least for re-recording pre-recorded material) -- cassettes, thanks to fundamental limitations of the format, really aren't capable of the dynamic range for live recording on par with, say, a half-track ReVox A77 at 15 ips).

Amusingly, the Dragon probably cost about as much as a ReVox B77 (which would have been its contemporary, or at least close) when both were still being made.

I revise my comment above in I should have said Micro Seiki was a major OEM turntable manufacture along another company whos name I had forgotten until it was mentioned earlier on, CEC. If I'm not mistaken they also manufactured other OEM audio equipment such as CD players????

CEC was another big OEM back in the olden days -- they made tts for, e.g., Marantz (e.g, the 6100), Yamaha (YP-B4 and its kin), and Radio Shack (LAB-300).

Oh -- FWIW, this is that little Pioneer/Phase Linear deck I mentioned earlier.

I realize this is something of a bait and switch... but there is a rather interesting "review" of sorts of the new Pioneer morph of the Universal OEM Turntable of the Twenty-First Century at AK. Link offered strictly as is and FWIW (and, no I do not mean to imply that the Pioneer tt is in any way representative of the titular Onkyo-branded tt of this thread).

    http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=645426

N.B. AK is down this weekend for a forum upgrade -- although I don't think they're moving to Vanilla-based forums (ahem).
