Onkyo CP 1050 Direct Drive Turntable new for 2015

Options
http://www.onkyousa.com/Products/model.php?m=CP-1050&class=Turntable

Well looks like Onkyo is getting back in to the turntable business. This one harkens back to the 70's kinda looks like an older Denon. A place I frequent will be getting these in next week, specs look pretty good, but neither they or Onkyo techs can not tell me who makes the Cartridge, they the tech at Onkyo said they will call me back so I hope to hear from them.

If I was to guess it's a middle of the road Audio Technica I would like to hear one and a guy at ABT told me he will sell me one at $477 out the door, funny thing is he had the slightest clue who makes Onkyo 's Cartridges they are on back order so apparently they are selling. I say Audio Technica thoughts anyone.

Well one guy says it seems like a good alternative to the crappy $900 belt drives on the market which I'm about ready to drop $1095 on a Music Hall, until I saw this the 3 tables I own now two Technics Direct Drives with Decent cartridges and a Sony Direct Drive with a pretty good cartridge. So why do I need a 4th table? The ones I have work great still look new but 30 years old.

It appears that this Onkyo comes with a Audio Technica 100E cartridge which for a $130 cartridge that's not bad it gets good reviews. I remember a lot of Onkyo Direct Drives floating around the barracks when I was stationed in Germany and they were solid performers back then.

I will check one out next week when the one store that's a Onkyo Dealer gets them in just out of curiosity just to see what they are like. I still he my eye on that music hall belt drive.

    Back on topic :- )

This new Onkyo tt is probably absolutely fine -- but it's also -- almost certainly -- a Hanpin "Super OEM" turntable built to Onkyo's specs. That's not dreadful (despite what some claim!), but don't expect "Onkyo of old" from that component.

    The new Onkyo:

    back_large.jpg

looks (to me) an awful lot (albeit somewhat less beefy) like the "100th Anniversary" Denon DP-A100 of a few years back:

    Denon-DP-A100-Turntable-4.jpg

(and the non-Anniversary morph, the DP-1300):

    d.jpg

and the Hanpin heritage of the arm, in both cases, is pretty evident --

    DJ-5500.jpg

Is that bad? a priori, no. Is it gonna be worth 500 smackers? Well -- I'd say a used Technics at half (or less) that (in good condition, of course) would be a better "investment" (for lack of a better word) as a tt to use.

EDIT: There's a Pioneer morph (of the DJ/Technics SL-1200-style Hanpin above), too, as you probably know:

I like the looks of the new Teac belt drive decks over the Onkyo, but that is a personal statement for my tastes. It has a simple, rich look to it, and at around
$300-$400 it would be my current new choice.aq8kwhr4d00q.jpg

I agree that getting anything "new" of real quality for under $1k in today's turntable world is a tall order. The expectation level of most buyers today has got to result in returns of perfectly good tables being at its highest level ever, I know that it is just the way business is done, but I see very few buyers happy with the sound straight out of the box, believing that vinyl itself sounds better since that is what everyone has told them and they have no real reference from days gone by.

I think that any of the above mentioned tables are a bargain compared to what Thorens is asking for its TD 350 at $6k or the TD 550 for $12k. Oh how things have changed (pricing that is).......having both vintage Thorens (TD 160) and newer designs TD 318 and TD 2001 very similar to the 350, I can honestly say that nothing is that radically different in today's offerings than those of 20 years ago that can be had for literally a song. I like the look of the top model, but would never see myself laying out that kind of cash.

OK this one reeks of cheese I don't want no super oem table won't even bother checking it out next week will settle for the Music Hall as originally planned. I did like Onkyo tables back in the day as much as my Technics Direct Drive Tables oh well. A belt drive with a decent cartridge it is.

Well... unfortunately (relative to my taste), the CA "Virtuoso Ebony" cartridge supplied with it is no great shakes. If I ever get suitably motivated,I will try it with another cartridge. A moderator at AK uses a Benz Ace on his, and swears by it:
"Mine is my primary table, running a Benz Ace. It provided the balance that the CA lacked, being highly shifted to the warm lush side. I have read a few reviews that called the Ace, and, by extension, other Benz carts, "clinical" or "sterile", but in my system, it seems to balance nicely."

I like mine; the music has 'life', and compels me to listen."
    http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=8219612&postcount=10

The SL-Q2 in the other photo has a DL-103 on it (purchased back when Comet Supply had 'em for $118) and I really like the lushness of the sound. The Technics arm isn't really quite heavy enough for the very low compliance DL-103, but I am in no way dissatisfied with the performance (maybe I am just not that picky).
Local vacuum tube guru Gary Kaufman (www.the-planet-org) uses an SL-1200 with the CA "Satisfy" arm. Gary added some mass to the headshell and runs a DL-103 on it. It sounds fine, but I don't have the gumption to go that route.

Someday, a more appropriate cartridge will go on the Marantz, and the DL-103 will end up on a big ol' vintage idler-drive tt (currently I have a Rek-O-Kut earmarked for the mission) with an appropriately heavy arm (thanks to another local guru, I have an ESL arm on loan to try with the R-O-K and the Denon) :- )

Well -- I wouldn't assume a priori that the problem wasn't simple/trivial (i.e., don't give up too quickly!).... BUT... that looks like a pretty complicated piece of hardware (i.e., a lot there to go wrong).

So I discovered the cables on my Technics 1400 are messed up. I've been wanting a newer better turntable. What would be a decent one in todays market for up to $500? You guys seem to not be too enthused about the Onkyo. I like the looks of the pro-ject though. I really like the look of the Teac.

I bought a debut carbon -then add a acrylic platter -then a speed box.. but now you can get all of that together new... called a Debut Carbon DC Espirt SB

that is what I would recommend. they have a white demo model for$70 cheaper. but it is white.

Onkyo did Confirm it was a Audio Technica Cartridge one person in the parts department said it was a 100E however one person said it was an Audio Technica but was unsure of the model. They both sounded confused to me. And I think I might of convinced them as I told them that it looked like a Audo Technica.

They did call me back to confirm that it was a AT cartridge maybe it was me that convinced them you would think they would be a little more familiar with thier products!

If I not mistaken, Clear audio makes the TT for Marantz... and a lot of those tables pictured all looked alike, I wouldn't be surprised that the Denon & onyko are made for them by someone else... Still think the new Onkyo looks pretty cool.

Yes the Marantz is a slightly tarted up CA "Emotion" tt (the CA model is no longer made; actually I don't know if the Marantz is or not).
