SDA 2A Receiver Question

  • Yes they are blade/blade. I will certainly let you know what happens with more power when it happens I am sure it will. I first need to come up with a new Idea on mounting I am not digging the way it is right now I have a few Ideas to make it work a little better to cramped up right now for my likings.
  • Lawdogg they sound really good man i am very happy with the outcome if an amp made them sound better I don't know what I would do with myself I mean maybe its just because I have been without so long that I am easily amused. For the cost of an amp its certainly going to happen soon though just to see whats up.

Wow, Freeride, is that the vid of your last colonoscopy? If so, two observations: 1) They had the 'scope's light source dialed up too high early on for the procedure to be of any diagnostic/therapeutic value. 2) It looks like you might suffer from some serious acid overproduction issues.

    jmho, of course.
  • Thanks for being so concerned about my **** haha. Sorry thats the only response i could think of. LOL
  • Alright went ahead and got an Adcom 555 amp for them and they do sound a bit louder not a substantial amount louder though I was hoping for a little more I guess. Seems i can turn the volume up farther without distortion. Now I am looking to do a crossover upgrade but I would like to keep the original tweeters I like the ear piercing highs they produce. Please advise on the direction I should take with them.

I could bring my 555 up to 11:00 & listen to it for hours & sounded very nice with the 565 pre which i think does a great job. A good pre is a plus & you can do upgrades on that amp if i recall, that will make it (i read) much better. I think the 555 sounds superb on the 2b's. My Denon POA2200 blows the 555 away powerwise (my opinion) with a tad less different sound in some areas. Does all the power make it better. Not to me. Im more into the sound quality within my budget :( it also may be due to the pra1200 pre im using. There are so many variables involved with seperates its crazy. Speaker Cable-placement-room size/other obstacles & variables. I havent done upgrades or spikes myself but it is on my list in future
    ..
  • I am just surprised that with the power the 555 has over my pioneer receiver I didn't get alot of volume increase.. yes I got some but not what I was expecting. Sounds great for sure had to make some adjustments on the built in equalizer on the receiver brought the higher frequencies down a few dbs compared to when i had the speakers wire to receivers amp. I listen to alot of different stuff from Al Green to five finger death punch so its tough to keep a certain setting that's right for all types of music I may utilize the equalizer memory feature it has I can set 6 different equalizer setups.

If your Adcom has not been gone through, it may need a re-cap etc. I had mine gone through last year and had caps replaced and everything checked out.

Call John at musicalconcepts.com and have a talk. He rebuilds and upgrades Adcom. I just had my Hafler 500 upgraded and it is outstanding.

It's not about volume per se, it's about having enough current to drive those puppies. The 2As are 4ohm nominal, and drop to 3.5 or less at certain frequencies, and that's before you do any upgrades. My 2ATLs are 4 ohm nominal, but drop below 3 ohms with the new, low resistance sub-bass drive inductors.

Those SL2000s have a nasty 5db resonance peak at around 13 KHz. If you like it, by all means keep them. To me, they're like finger nails on a chalk board.

I upgraded from SL-1000 to the RDO-194 tweeters before I rebuilt the crossovers. Without the crossover upgrade the tweeters seemed a little laid back. However with the crossover upgrade they are front and center without the harshness of the old tweeters. Highly recommended.

  • Well guys i unhooked from the adcom and am using the sc-61 power again I just wasnt impressed with the adcom over the receiver and it was even more clear after I switched back. Maybe the old amp needs to be gone through. I am in the market for something better that I can tell a favorable difference between the AVR output and the amp. I wish I could demo my system in person for you guys to show you how loud and good it sounds with the AVR. But from all I have read i am leaving alot on the table by just using that. So I am seeking more sound maybe I just need different speakers like some TL's or something. Any advice would be appreciated.

Freeride, It might be helpful if you pick up a meter to measure the sound level when making comparisons. A difference in sound level can be perceived as being better when swapping amps in and out of your system. Where my 555 really shines is in how well it is able to control the bass compared to my AVR. You don't have to crank it up loud to hear the difference.

Your Pioneer is 4 ohm rated, however the distortion levels rise quite a bit, which may be what you're hearing. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/StaticFiles/Manuals/Home/SC-61_OperatingInstructions041912.pdf
The Adcom should be evaluated by a qualified Tech. As others have noted, it's a great amp, and should easily power those 2As to deafening levels without distortion. Something is amiss.

  • Anyone have any experience with the Emotiva XPA-2? If so tell me your results I am seriously thinking about trying one out.

WM - I noticed that too (read) the other day distortion goes way up on the 4ohm load and after real close evaluation I understand the bass is floppy although the highs still sound quite decent. I am not spending any more on this amp I will just bay it I guess. I want something new..hopefully something exactly as I want ?? I dont know its fun though. I called today about the tweeter replacement said they would have 500 of them by end of April. Do you have a crossover parts list? The Polk Schematic is hard to read the values they are kind of blotchy I could take the speaker apart I guess to see the values needed but i dont want to till I have the parts. Think you could help me out? Thanks for the continued discussion.

The schematic isn't blotchy or hard to read on my workstation.
For a standard upgrade, you'll need the following:
    Stereo Side:
    Hi-Pass:
    One 12uf Capacitor
One 0.5 ohm Resistor (in place of Polyswitch)
    Two 2.7 ohm Resistors

    Lo-Pass:
    One 20uf Capacitor

    Dimensional Side:
    Lo-Pass:
    One 20uf Capacitor

    Sub-Bass Drive:
    One 260uf Capacitor

    Optional Sub-Bass Drive:
One 5.6mh Erse SuperQ Inductor (14 gauge from Erse, or 16 gauge from Parts Express)

    "TL" Modification:
Add one 5.8uf Shunt Capacitor across the 2.7 ohm Resistor in Series with the Tweeter.

This is for one speaker, so double everything for the pair.

The Emotiva amps are very good. I have not heard the XPA-2 but I did have the XPA-1 mono blocks hooked up to some Magnepans. They are powerful, detailed and just sound good. In my opinion, for the price they can't be beat. I am thinking of picking up the XPA-200 when I find some SDAs.

  • MW on my schematic it shows what looks like a 750pf capacitor in parallel with the 12uf capacitor. Here is the link https://us.v-cdn.net/5021930/uploads/attachments/1/8/5/1/1/26673.pdf

That's a small silver mica shunt cap, used to improve the performance of the Mylar cap. It's not needed with Metalized Polypropylene Caps
